The vet found a "sliver" in her right back about an inch long that had abcessed. It had been there about 3/4 of a year from last summer I think she got it from crawling under a fence hopefully she will be alittle nicer now and live a long life being a cat. I wish I had seen it earlier. Thanks everyone I'm glad there was no thyroid problem as that can get complicated but I saved her when she was a kitten and she has had a long life hopefully she still has a few more lives left.::thumbs::

Oh that's great Liberty!!!  I'm so glad for you that it wasn't something much worse.  No wonder she had been so crabby!  That's a big damn sliver for a cat!

the problem is that she is very independent and does not like to be picked up or touched except behind the ears so i never noticed it and it did'nt swell up very much so I never saw it my other cat you could wrap around your neck and she would just purr they are like people with their own temperment.

Being an outdoor cat, that's a risk they run.  And seeing either the sliver or anything else under all that fur is tricky.  Especially with a cat that doesn't want to be handled.  And I bet TK would agree with me, that a cat purring doesn't neccessarily mean they are fine.  No one knows for sure why cats purr.  I'd worked on many injured cats that rumbled and purred like crazy.

That is really good news!

and yes, I do concur with UTR about the purring. No one knows why cas purr and they will always do it for the oddest reasons.

I do know that the 'sound' of a cat's purr will change in different situations. Content relaxed cats will purr softly while frightened cats will purr a higher pitched sound.

Your poor cat must have been in so much pain having that in her for so long! I know how she feels! You see, when I was 15 we used to slide across the wood floor in our socks. I got a splinter in my foot, thought I took it out but the foot kept hurting for a whole month and I couldn't figure out  why.

One day I noticed the infection squeezed it and a one inch long and very thick hunk of wood came sliding out of my foot along with a bucket of pus! gross.

My foot was instantly out of pain and every time I get a splinter I often recall that!

It's funny how they can go unnoticed until they come to a head. This thing in my foot showed no heat, redness or swelling until all of a sudden.

Ok now, for Libertyhead and everyone else, this was a good lesson on observation in your pets behavior!
Whenever you see something out of the norm with your pet, best to take it to the vet right away! Cats especially are a really odd bunch. They often do not show you what's ailing them like a dog would. Cats will do odd things like soil outside the litterbox, hide, or become anti social where your dog will limp, whine, moan, or mope about.
