All she does is walk around crying, ya can't touch her tail section as she wacks you with her claws. She was a fat cat now she is skinny, she is an outdoor cat and 16 yrs old. I am afraid she will wack the kids and hurt them. Very anti-social and a great mouser but I feel it's time to "take her out behind the shed". I am worried the younger cat (4 yrs old) will not have a freind, thats why I might get a dog from the shelter, she was at the vet last year and gave them a hard time with her fighting they said they never seen such a mean cat........What do I do Twitchy?..come and save me!

I'm not Twitchin' Kitten but I do know animal medicine.  Can I ask, first off, is she spayed?  Is she current on all her vaccines?  What do you feed her and is she still eating and drinking?

Hey, I'm sorry your cat may be at the end of her life, but 16 is a very good age.

When you mean tail section can you explain exactly where this is? Is it only her tail or the small of her back where her tail meets her body and tail included?

If she's an outdoor only or mostly outdoor cat, the first thing I would think of is infection from a bite wound. If she's relatively healthy and has this infection, you may not see much as she'll be fighting it off rather well, but the area that had been bit would be very sore and that would explain the nastiness.

Cats by nature are not nasty. Something happend to this cat to put her on her guard from humans. Outdoor cats will put up this protective front to keep from being molested by strangers who they think mean them harm. Sometimes this can produce the opposite when it comes to some people. They see a nasty cat and then they'll throw rocks or worse.

Anyway, cats lacking socialization with family members on a regular basis will behave like this too. But this is irrelevant now because of her age and health status.

Now, She could have been bit, the cut healed but the bite went to the spinal column causing severe pain. Usually there would be some kind of lameness associated with this but there's always the exception.

Don't worry about the younger cat needing a friend. Cats actually are loners and will do just fine alone. Especially if the older sick cat isn't acting so friendly lately.

A dog just might put the youngster off too if not properly introduced to the cat and the proper time and patience taken to do this. This is the single mistake made when introducing new pets to a family and thus leading to 'enemies' in the home among the critters.

If you can get your cat to the vet please do so. There are so many things that can be wrong from the worst to a simple round of antibiotics.

I don't envy you and what you may face, but do know that 16 years and outdoors at that is a credit to your care and I know you'll make the right decision once the vet examines her and gives you all the information you need.

Please keep me posted. Hang in there.

Yes she is spayed, vaccines? what the heck is that? last year she was fine at the vets. She eats all dry food and water (meow mix) feed her that for forever. The reason I think she is dying is the wt. loss. She is due to go to the vet next month. (I have to throw a sheet or pillow case over her to get her into the pet carrier) thats always fun!

Vaccines are exactly just the same as you give your child to prevent deadly diseases.

Rabies being one of them. How many days has she been acting like this? Rabies can show in as little as 24 hours and the animal can be dead by the end of the week. Getting bit by an animal with rabies can be deadly to a human.

I would get that cat to the vet ASAP and bring the youngster along to get a full course of vaccines and a full check up as well.

First of all, my sincere sympathy for you.  A sick pet is as devastating as a sick family member.

Now 16 is old, but I had a cat that lived to 21, so it may not be too late.  I suspect and abcess too, the part about the reaction to a certain area is a dead give away.  Don't wait until next week, see the vet now before the infection spreads.

Also concerning the weight loss, could it be a tapeworm or something like that?  At any rate, I think its time for this kitty to become an indoor cat.  I suggest a warm secluded box with a blanket.

Good luck.::grhug::

It's not the tail section but mostley the top of her back in the rear. She is totally anti-social and when the kids are in the room I usually let her out as she does'nt "play well" as compared to my other cat. Like I say the weight loss is what gets me. And she gets a checkup next month maybe I should up the checkup date? I am thinking that cat leukemia may be what she has. If thats the case off she goes to the cat heaven cause I cannot see spending over 400.00 to let her live what another 2 yrs? I have had her for along time and I will hate to see her go.........but it is what it is. do you think it may be something else?

I will ask about the abcess, but my wife just said that the cat never liked to be touched there. I will take your advise and see if she can get in to see the vet sooner. Like I said thats a chore to get her into the pet carrier and not  the thing for the light hearted. If I can cover her sight it's usually not that bad. And the spot w/blanket will last about 5 min. she wants to roam.

Thank you Saint. Yes the sensitivity to one specific area IS a tell tale sign of a problem locally.

Yes you should up the vet appt. I would GET HER THERE TOMORROW.

She WILL lose weight from an infection. Why? because her body is working overtime spending all her resources to keep the infection at bay. Now you live up north where the winters are colder too... this puts an additional strain on her 'resources' and all the more weight she'll lose.

I understand about your worries if it's lukemia but that is highly unlikely at this stage of her life, although not out of the question, but highly unlikely.

Cats CAN and SHOULD be vaccinated against feline leukemia.

Please, take her to the vet in the morning. That is the ONLY way to know what is really wrong with her. We are not vets here and I for one will NEVER give you veterinary advice. I can only tell you what I know from experiences and believe me, I have plenty. But this cat needs to see the vet tomorrow.

Im terribly sorry about your cat. We have been through things of this nature with two of our much loved cats this year. I hope the vet can see her soon, so you can have peace of mind and your pet won't have to suffer so much. They get so scared when they don't feel well.

I will call the vet in the AM and get-her-in ASAP thanks for all the great advise. So is the leukemia thing something that cats get when they are young? I just looked at the paperwork and it looks like that vaccination was done along with rabies and distemper but she sure is whinning alot and not as fast as she was at catching chipmunks and stuff...............she is an outdoor cat but she drives me nuts untill I let her in at night and she has allways had a nice place to sleep (at the foot of my bed) kinda warms a place for my feet at night. I will keep yas posted on what happens.

Don't worry about the lukemia. Trust your vet and please keep us informed.

Give her a scruffle for me.

I have to just jump in here and steer you in the direction of thyroid, at least

as a question for your vet. The weight loss AND the "bitchiness" in a 16

year old cat suggest that to me.

As to the rest of it, definite vet ASAP.

Oh yes! good thinking Sweet Pea!

Lukemia is something they would have had to contract at a young age or if living in a house full of Lukemia infected cats. But if they are not lukemia positive all these years, then she most likely has built up a resistence/immunity to the disease and I wouldn't worry about that unless your vet says you should.

As for Distemper, Rabies and all the other vaccines... they are to be given every year, not just once per lifetime. I am surprised your vet doesn't do this. Unless you mean the paper work you looked at is from the last vet visit? Then she's ok in the vaccine area.

Please let us know how she is.

It is always profoundly sad when a beloved family cat or dog is nearing the end of their life.  Such heartache!  I agree with Twitchy: Her long life is a credit to your care.  Our thoughts will be with you, librtyhead, as you make this difficult decision.  By the way: I think it is AWESOME that your family adopts shelter pets.  They need homes desperately!Good for you and your wife.

What is your 16 year-old cat's name?
