After the 4 SO inning topic yesterday, this one came to mind for me today:

What is the least number of pitches that a single pitcher can throw and still record a complete game?

I 'll let people stew on this for a couple of days and then post an answer (unless someone beats me to it)...

The LEAST would be 81. No one has come close, I'll bet.

Three strikes pitched by three outs by nine innings.

It's a trick question, I think.  A baseball game can be called on account of rain/inclement weather, and it's still considered a complete game if it's => 5 innings.  So the answer would be 45.

What if the first pitch to each batter is popped up and caught? Ok, it's unlikely, but the question was the least number possible, not probable.

One pitch to each of three batters in each of nine innings. 1 x 3 x 9 = 27.

Or, to go with Brian's called-on-account-of-rain theory, 1 x 3 x 5 = 15.

to be a complete game, he has to face at least 27 batters.  if he can get them to Ground out, or pop out, i would guess 27: one pitch per batter.

no, i don't think so.

5 innings is long enough to be in the books as a win or loss, but i don't think it counts  as a "Complete game"  he'll get credit for the win, but not much else.

Ok, really thinking about this....

It's theoretically possible to do it with zero.

If the pitcher balks, the batter gets the bag. Then pick him off trying to steal. So the pitcher would have to balk (or otherwise cause a penalty) at every batter, and every base runner would have to try to steal second and get picked off doing it.

Theoretically possible but rather unlikely.

Rinna - nope. A balk can only occur if a runner is on base and only the runner gets the next base (not the batter), but you are very close to the answer...

the answer (as detailed below) is 9 pitches

theoretically possible but ain't never going to happen:

first batter comes to the plate and swings at the first pitch, getting a triple.  next batter comes to the plate. runner on third tries to steal home.  pitcher sees the runner, steps off the pitching rubber and throws the ball to the catcher.  batter swings at the ball and is called out by the plate ump for interference while the runner gets sent back to third.  next two batters do the same thing as the runner on third tries to steal home each time.  result - the pitcher has only thrown 1 pitch in the inning and has gotten 3 outs from doing it.  multiply the same scenario by 9 innings and the pitchers gets a 9 hit shutout while only throwing 9 pitches.
