I had what many felt was the most famous character ever in Dragonrealms - a high level Paladin leader.  When I left Dragonrealms to have time to help raise my kids properly, people were selling their items, their in-game money, their whole character for thousands of dollars.  There was a whole market for it.  I had offers and I could have easily gotten 5K+ for him and that's not including the special items I had which were unique because I got in early in the game's development.

I did NOT sell him for one reason: I hated when people sold their characters because that character in game never acted the same.. it blew the reality for those connected to that person.  I was extremely popular, lead around 400 people in just one War alone.  Everyone knew me, I started the first popular in-game Membership Order (Order of the Apostles), and just did a bunch of things that got me well-known (shifted the track of the Paladin Guild to be more serviceable to the community, conducted game-wide events through the Paladin Guild, worked out of game to improve their abilities with the tech staff, etc.) and was just a hardcore, never got out of character, thief-hating Paladin that was controversial in the way he spoke and did things.

So, I didn't sell him because I knew whoever bought him wasn't going to RP it the way I did and there were just too many people connected to it.  I would have been a big D**K for doing it, in my book.

10 minutes ago I went to the official website of the Apostles and I see, in contrast to the last time I checked it, they wrote me out of the Founding story.  That bothers me, but that was years ago and I don't have connections to anywhere there to make complaining even worth it.  For a second it made me sorry I didn't sell, but that was in anger, because I am happy I didn't even though I am apparently forgotten on that big work.  I have to assume some newer people took it over and wanted to make it theirs, or more neutral or something.

If you create a truly great character like your Paladin and you feel a real connection to that character (it is an extension of you) it can be a real joy to roleplay it. I've had some great times in tabletop campaigns in the past roleplaying my cleric and half orc fighter, I've still got the character sheets from 1987 in one of my old D & D folders.

I don't think you can put a monetary value on a character you've created from scratch, there is nothing like it and I wouldn't swap some of the adventures I have had in the past for anything.

I used to play AD&D.  I had a 12th level Paladin and a 9th level dwarven Fighter.

I think some of you have it all wrong!  Paladins can be fun.  It's just that they can't be cruel to good characters.  You can't go around beating the crap out of Lawful Good humans and expect to keep your Paladin status.

On the other hand, my Paladin used to grab Chaotic Evil (orcs, mostly) monsters by the hair, and use their heads to open up stuck doors.  Now THAT'S a good time! :cool:

It's not about not killing.  It's about killing the right people. :D

I use to play AD&D back in the day. I think perhaps more than  20 years have passed since I last played. I used to love it so but after a while real life became more interesting than fantasy and D&D lost its attraction. I have a hard time imagining doing it again now.

::bfish::

Just admit it, you're afraid of getting backstabbed by a thief or eaten by the undead.

It was SO TRAUMATIC! I think what frightened me the most were the venereal diseases our characters picked up in the town after the module was completed. It was a one in six chance, don'tcha know?

::chuckle::  You goof.

I was always a holy fighter of some sort.  Those were great times and when that stuff got computerized and made into sophsticated video games it was exciting.

I once got drafted in the army of a failing state. I ended commanding a small unit that defended a gate to a walled town against nightly attacks from bandits in the wilds.

It was always difficult to travel through unstable regions like that. Looking for beasts and treasure was so often interrupted by geo-political problems.

My half orc Fighter Grishnak arathon ended up staying in a town as a militia commander mainly because I couldn't take part in the gaming sesions as much as I would have liked to.
