The news came as supporters of Mrs McCann and her husband, Gerry, spoke about the "shadow of suspicion" that the couple know will follow them into the future if Madeleine is never found. To me, this is the crux of the whole thing. They don't really give a rat's ass about finding Madelaine. What they want is to continue on their worldwide publicity tour and elicit sympathy, in the hopes that it'll keep their sorry asses out of jai.

more steaming horse manure. The parents of Madeleine McCann have hired a team of private investigators to search for her in Morocco amid concerns that Portuguese police are failing to examine fresh sightings. ...(former SAS guys.) On the 150th day since Madeleine disappeared, it emerged that a millionaire benefactor is paying tens of thousands of pounds a week for a private security firm to re-interview witnesses and investigate pedophile networks in Morocco. The McCanns are convinced that Madeleine could have been smuggled to north Africa after four independent sightings of a girl matching her description. They want the police inquiry refocused onto the search for their daughter and are determined to clear their names after nearly a month of frenzied speculation by Portuguese police and press about their alleged involvement in the death of their daughter. Last week their lawyers made a formal application to the prosecutor for access to a 4,000-page 10-volume police dossier, which would include details of forensics, witness statements and a reconstruction of the night of Madeleine’s disappearance. As part of their defense, a separate team of private investigators, Control Risks, has been taking independent witness statements from the McCanns and the seven friends with whom they dined on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance. They hope the tactic will enable them to rebut persistent claims by the Portuguese police about “suspicious inconsistencies” in the statements their officers had taken. Reports in Portugal suggest the public prosecutor will this week request further questioning of the couple and their holiday party. The McCanns’ legal team is also considering conducting independent forensic tests on the hire car in which the Portuguese police claim they have found “bodily fluids” that are an 80% match to Madeleine’s. The car is being kept for the McCanns in the garage of tycoon John Geraghty, 68, in his villa near Praia da Luz. Last week the McCanns faced further allegations in the Portuguese press. On Wednesday, senior officers said they were investigating two “unaccounted for” hours during a trip the couple made to Huelva, Spain on Aug. 3. On Thursday an unnamed police source said detectives believed Kate McCann accidentally killed Madeleine in the couple’s holiday apartment while her husband played tennis. The child’s body was then stored in a fridge before being transported and disposed of in the hire car. The McCanns described the latest accusations as “ludicrous.” A spokesman for the couple pointed out the trip to Huelva was conducted in the “full glare” of the world’s media, while the couple played tennis together with a coach on the day that Madeleine disappeared. Kate and Gerry have now decided to take on the search for Madeleine themselves after concerns that the Portuguese police have given up. In Portugal, an investigation that initially boasted 945 officers has been scaled down to about 20. The team of private investigators in Morocco is being paid for by Brian Kennedy, the £350m home improvements tycoon, who last week pledged to fund their fightback. Kennedy himself travelled to Rabat last week for a progress report. The couple was disappointed last week when a photograph of a girl bearing similarities to Madeleine, taken by a Spanish tourist, turned out to be the daughter of a local olive farmer. They believe other leads, however, could prove more fruitful. On his blog yesterday, Gerry said: “Despite the disappointment, it is encouraging that people are being vigilant and have not stopped looking.” The investigators recently reinterviewed Mari Olli, a Norwegian tourist who saw a girl matching Madeleine’s description at a gas station on the outskirts of Marrakesh six days after Madeleine’s disappearance. Olli said: “She was a sweet blonde girl who said something like, ‘Can I see mummy soon?’ “I’m almost certain it was Madeleine, but the Portuguese police never took me seriously. They never even took my statement. My only hope is that someone does something about it now and the little girl is found.” When the McCanns visited Rabat in June to raise awareness about Madeleine’s disappearance, a source close to the ambassador told them that a second sighting had been made at the Ibis hotel opposite the gas station. Private investigators are still trying to track down the male witness, who is from Yorkshire. The team is also looking at a third sighting, made by Jeannie Thompson, 56, from Devon. She says she saw a blonde girl looking “disheveled” as a man took photographs of her at a cafe in Marrakesh on May 11. She reported the sighting to British police, who took her statement, but has heard nothing since. A fourth sighting was made in the village of Zaio in northern Morocco. Isabel Gonzalez, 60, says she saw a girl with blonde hair being dragged across the road by a Muslim woman. She said: “I am convinced the girl was her. But when I contacted Portuguese police they said they would not look into it because they believed Madeleine was already dead. It has caused a lot of pain in my heart.” The Moroccan interior minister, police chief and the head of the secret service have promised the McCanns that “if the girl is here, she will be found.” A senior detective, however, said more prominence was given to local sightings. “Most tourists who say they have seen Madeleine cannot see the difference between a European girl and a Moroccan one, as in the case of the Spanish tourist.” While cases of children being smuggled from Europe to north Africa are rare, the country has a reputation for child prostitution and sex tourism. A report by the UN economic and social council raised concerns about “men from other countries, particularly the Gulf states, looking for girl prostitutes.” It adds that El Hajeb, a town in central Morocco, is notorious for child prostitution. The McCanns will today mark the 150th day since Madeleine’s disappearance by attending a church service near their home in Rothley, Leicestershire. “It is just another day without Madeleine,” a friend said. The McCanns are now trying to keep life for their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, as normal as possible. They have been told that Madeleine is on a “trip.” Gerry said: “Sean and Amelie have settled back into nursery, almost as if they have never been away.” Last week the couple was given further encouragement after David Miliband, the foreign secretary, telephoned Gerry McCann. It is the first time he has contacted the couple since police accused them of being involved in their daughter’s death three weeks ago.

I still think that four bullets (assuming 2 double-taps) could solve this situation adequately. I don't think there's ever a chance of the girl's body being found. The only thing that's attainable now is justice. Lady Cop wrote: McCanns send sleuths to Morocco

Madeleine McCann 'died after fall down steps' By Caroline Gammell in Praia da Luz Last Updated: 1:56am BST 01/10/2007 Portuguese police believe Madeleine McCann died after falling down a flight of steps and that her parents panicked, hiding her body because they feared being blamed, it was claimed yesterday. It was alleged that the four-year-old smashed the back of her head on a ceramic flagstone at her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz. Fearing they would be charged with manslaughter, Kate and Gerry McCann then got rid of the body, possibly with the help of their friends, it was alleged. The latest theory against the couple, who are official suspects in their daughter's disappearance, was dismissed as "ludicrous and unsubstantiated" by their spokesman. It emerged as a source close to the McCanns said police were investigating claims that a disgruntled ex-employee from the Ocean Club, where the family was staying, may have been involved in Madeleine's abduction. Mrs McCann has said she would be willing to risk going to prison by speaking out about the events of May 3 in breach of Portugal's secrecy laws. As suspects, or arguidos, the couple are prevented from speaking about the investigation, and have expressed frustration that they are not able to defend themselves against increasingly lurid allegations regarding their daughter's fate. Despite the ban, they are in talks with chat-show hosts in the US in an attempt to remind people Madeleine is missing. Yesterday, the McCanns spent a quiet day in their home town of Rothley in Leicestershire, marking 150 days since their daughter disappeared. They are adamant that she was abducted but police in Portugal were described as "100 per cent" certain that the little girl died in the family's apartment in the Algarve. A senior detective told Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas: "The only thing to investigate is how the body disappeared." The newspaper claims Madeleine fell down steps at the back of the apartment. Photographs taken at the time show a children's safety barrier above the steps. The new theory emerged after a report from Britain said specialist sniffer dogs had detected the "smell of death" on the steps, it was claimed. In the past, Mr and Mrs McCann, both 39, have been accused of hiding their daughter's body because she had been sedated. But yesterday, a source close to the couple hit back at the allegations. "Where is the proof that this happened? Madeleine was put to bed at 7pm and there was a witness. When is Madeleine supposed to have fallen? "If the police are 100 per cent certain that Madeleine fell down some steps, that means they must be able to prove she died in that way. It's just not possible without a body." The couple's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, added: "It is just ludicrous. All of these reports are unsourced and unsubstantiated." A tip-off claiming that a former Ocean Club employee was involved in Madeleine's disappearance was sent to the Prince of Wales's official website, and passed to police. It alleged that a maid who used to work at the Mark Warner resort kidnapped Madeleine in revenge for being fired. Police have discovered the woman identified does exist and that the tip-off came from an email address registered in the Iberian peninsula.

i'm just not ready to call it yet... maybe if we ever see some evidence in a court of law. if the mcanns are in fact 'innocent' victims of their own stupidity and neglect, i feel sorry for them. first murat did it. then traffickers. she's been 'sighted' everywhere but east armpit arkansas. then she smashed her head open and the parents disposed of her. oh, and she was given an OD by the parents. OOPS.... now it seems the disgruntled maid from the resort did it. this is a festival of red herrings and misinformation. i can't form an opinion 100% yet. in any event, i think the parents are making a disgusting spectacle of themselves. funny how they beat feet back to UK as soon as they were named suspects. now they're going to do barbara walters 'show'. and play a little softball. like there is someone on the planet who hasn't seen a picture of the child??

This is what I find particularly nauseating about the whole thing (other than the crime itself, of course). Getting publicity out to find the child is good. But there comes a time when this is obviously all about them and their "good names". If it was me (or any sane person) you'd better believe I'd be strapping myself down to a polygraph, answering any damn question asked of me, letting everything I owned be sprayed with Luminol til it was soaked. The point of the whole exercise is to find Maddie, not to maek the parents feel all warm and fuzzy. If they'd fully cooperate and STFU to the media, they could be eliminated, and the "real killer" could be found already! That's what makes me wanna wretch!

The head of Portugal's police federation has launched an astonishing attack on Gerry and Kate McCann, accusing them of "hindering" the investigation into their daughter's disappearance. The attack came amid claims that strands of hair that could be Madeleine's had been found behind a sofa in the family's apartment at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz. The hair is being examined, along with blood samples found on a wall in the apartment, by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham for any traces which could prove whether the missing four-year-old was drugged. One of the theories apparently being examined by police is that Madeleine died after being sedated by her parents, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley, Leics. Police supposedly believe they may then have covered up the death by hiding the body and moving it weeks later in their Renault hire car. The hair sample was found close to where English sniffer dogs reportedly detected blood and the "scent of death" in the apartment, and police believe it may be "decisive", according to the Portuguese newspaper Journal de Noticias. The latest attack on the couple came from Carlos Anjos, the head of the federation of criminal police, which represents officers from the Policia Judiciaria investigating the case. Mr Anjos added to the growing tension between the McCanns and the Portuguese authorities, accusing them of using "diversion tactics" to distract from the investigation and deliberately "hindering" the inquiry. "Since their daughter disappeared, Gerry and Kate have followed a strategy of almost daily announcements of new facts," he told the Diario de Noticias. He claimed these "facts" were hindering the investigation. He was also critical of what he called the "ridiculous episode" in which Mr McCann feared he was in the same room as his daughter's abductor when he checked on his three children on the evening of May 3, shortly before Madeleine's disappearance. BOLLOCKS. Mr McCann had told a friend how he thought little at the time of a door that was ajar - which he had previously believed closed - but said he had since begun to realise his daughter's abductor could have been hiding there. Mr Anjos, who has also been involved in the case, said: "If he was suspicious that there was a man in the apartment, and then he calmly went to dinner, then words cannot describe how negligent he is as a father." Clarence Mitchell, the family's spokesman, said Mr McCann's realisation that he had been in the same room as the abductor only came to him later and the comments had been "totally misunderstood" by Mr Anjos. "This was said in the original witness statement," Mr Mitchell said. "There is nothing that has come out recently that should be of surprise to the officers." He added that the suggestion the couple were seeking to hinder the case was "completely untrue". "I would suggest the same goes for the sources in Portugal - but far more so," he said. "There is no deliberate campaign to get in the way of the police investigation. This has been done in a spirit of co-operation." Meanwhile, Mr McCann's mother, Eileen, dismissed claims about the DNA allegedly found in the couple's hire car, telling the Belfast Telegraph: "Little Amelie is wearing Madeleine's sandals and she is in and out of the car. Cuddly toys are in it. It's nonsense."
