Madeleine McCann police to trawl reservoir Last Updated: 5:28pm BST 14/10/2007 A vast reservoir near to the town where Madeleine McCann went missing is set to be trawled as police relaunch an active search for her. The new inquiry head has now tripled the size of his team in a bid to crack the case and ordered fresh searches of a 10 mile area around the holiday town of Praia da Luz from where she disappeared five months ago. A search is also expected of the dense woodland and isolated dwellings around the reservoir - known locally as Barragem da Bravura, literally the Reservoir of the Wilderness - which leading detective Paulo Rebelo believes was not combed carefully enough in the days following the four-year-old's disappearance. According to Portuguese newspaper the Correio Da Manha, the "meticulous" Rebelo has ordered his reinforced team to pay "special attention" to the area around the jagged reservoir, which has a 25 mile perimeter, and is 15 miles from Luz. Sites to the south of the Ocean Club where the McCanns and their friends stayed, including Luz and Burgau beaches, are also to be "fine combed" by inspectors, who will particularly focus on spots where the British group used their mobile telephones. These are the first significant searches for three months. Detectives have already revisited the family's rented apartment and the tapas bar where they dined on May 3, the night Madeleine disappeared, and this weekend began a review of the case files, looking for loose ends. A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann said: "Any widening of the search area is encouraging and we would welcome that. It does sound as though there is more vigour in that aspect of the inquiry which is good." He added that while it would be a "tragedy" for the family if police searches eventually yield the little girl's body, at least it would help lift the cloud of suspicion from them. "If she is dead then she is dead but not by their hand," he said. Another friend dismissed a report this weekend about suspicious footprints in the McCanns' apartment and the car they hired 25 days after Madeleine went missing as being like "something out of an Agatha Christie novel". "It doesn't imply guilt in any shape or form," she said. "There are a lot of perfectly good reasons why a footprint of that nature might be found." Newspapers cited a report on results due back from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham this week that detailed a footprint in the apartment which had specks of unidentified blood in it, linking this to a potentially matching footprint above the bumper of the McCanns' car. But an FSS source said: "The simple fact is, as was the case before, the results are not conclusive." Meanwhile, it emerged that Kate and Gerry McCann, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley in Leicestershire, could be the only official suspects in their daughter's disappearance within a month. According to British expatriate Robert Murat's lawyer, Francisco Pagarete: "It's possible that in the next four weeks his status will be cleared because we will have reached six months since he has been a suspect in this case." He said the District Attorney could still step in to increase the time limit detectives have to decide about their suspects, but added: "If they consider that the situation with regards to my client his already been resolved then his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life. It's just a question of waiting."

'Proof' McCanns did not sedate Madeleine By Caroline Gammell Last Updated: 2:52pm BST 19/10/2007 Lawyers for Kate and Gerry McCann have gathered scientific evidence proving that the couple did not sedate their children as they fight to clear their names over the disappearance of their eldest daughter. The couple, both 39, has always dismissed these claims as “utterly ludicrous” and insisted they never gave any of their three children - including two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie - any such medication. Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry have never used sedatives on their children and any suggestion to the contrary is both offensive and defamatory. “The lawyers working on their behalf are constantly assessing all the aspects of the case and will take action as they deem appropriate.” It is understood the couple’s legal team hired forensic specialists to examine hair samples from the twins, who were in the same room as Madeleine in the Ocean Club apartment in Praia da Luz when she disappeared an May 3, and no trace of sedative was found. A source close to the legal team said: “It would be logical for tests to be carried out on the twins to show that they have never been given sedatives. “It would be right to say those tests show no evidence of sedatives in their systems. It backs up Kate and Gerry’s claims that they have never sedated the children and explains why they are so certain they can prove that the allegation is just another smear.” Life is slowly returning to normal for the McCanns, with the twins back at nursery and the media attention dying down. Mrs McCann does not intend to return to work but Mr McCann is expected to go back to his cardiology position at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester before Christmas. A friend of the couple said Mr McCann would have probably already returned to work had the couple not been made arguidos on September 7. They will remain suspects for eight months, unless Portuguese police request a three month extension and if no charges have been brought, they can apply for the status to be dropped. As the couple fight to clear their name, prime minister Gordon Brown spoke to his Portuguese counterpart Jose Socrates about Madeleine during an EU summit in Lisbon. Mr Brown has followed the case closely and was in direct contact with Mr McCann via mobile phone when he was still Chancellor. Mr Brown’s official spokesman said: “They both agreed what matters was there should be the closest possible co-operation between the Portuguese and British police.” The Portuguese authorities came under fire last night in a documentary in which a team of UK criminal investigators claimed local police missed opportunities to find forensic evidence in the hours after Madeleine disappeared. Professor Dave Barclay, a forensic analyst, told a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary the evidence might have cleared her parents of involvement on day one. He said police should have been “more aggressive” in protecting the family’s holiday apartment from being contaminated. “It’s clear that the forensic examination on the first day wasn’t what we would have expected,” he said. “There were opportunities missed. And one of those opportunities did a great disservice to the McCanns.” Chris Stevens, a former detective superintendent, said after an examination of the scene that a potential abductor could have been in and out of the apartment in “less than a minute”. The team also identified another potential hole in the investigation. The large industrial bins around the Ocean Club complex provided a possible hiding place for a body. They were emptied as normal between midnight and 4am on the night Madeleine disappeared despite the search still going on, the programme said.

hey! i know that guy! Madeleine sketch shows 'abductor' The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have released images of a man they believe abducted their daughter in May from a Portuguese resort. The artist's sketches show a man with dark, greasy collar-length hair and wearing a purple or maroon top with beige trousers, carrying a child. The images were drawn by an FBI-trained forensic artist using details from a friend of the McCanns. The friend saw the man but did not link him to the disappearance at the time.

McCanns Accused of Using Madeleine Fund to Pay Their Mortgage Monday, October 29, 2007 A spokesman for the McCann family has refused to comment on allegations they used some of the Madeleine fund to pay their mortgage. The statement comes after the Daily Mail reported that the family’s spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, confirmed: "part of the donations ... had been used to help with mortgage payments". Mitchell told Sky News the use of the money was in line with the fund's objectives, "to provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine's family". The Find Madeleine Fund has attracted more than £1 million (over $2 million) in public donations, to help find Madeleine McCann. However, use of the fund has been called into question after it was revealed about a third of the money had been used to meet the McCanns' living costs, publicity fees and pay staff. But the family has defended the fund, and said they would not use it for their legal fees. Mitchell, recently appointed as the family's PR spokesman, said he would not be paid from the Find Madeleine Fund but from "private financial backers" to the McCanns. Six months after their daughter went missing, the McCanns are facing financial pressure. While Kate McCann is unlikely to return to her job as a part-time GP, Gerry will return to his work as a consultant, a move likely to help ease the financial pressure.

he's going to work 3 half-days per week with no patient contact. damn, i hope he doesn't strain himself. LONDON, England (CNN) -- The father of Madeleine McCann has returned to his job as a cardiologist in central England. Gerry McCann said he had done everything he could do personally to find his 4-year-old daughter and that he would now be relying on the search campaign to continue the effort. "We've got an infrastructure and support system behind us now, and to be honest, unless Madeleine's found we're not expecting any significant developments in the near future," McCann told reporters outside Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, about 170 kilometers (100 miles) north of London. The McCann family has a Web site and fund to aid the search and support the family financially.

Madeleine McCann 'sighting' in the Balkans Detectives involved in the hunt for Madeleine McCann are following up a claim that she has been sighted in the Balkans. A British tourist believes he may have seen the missing four-year-old while on a trip to the Roman Catholic shrine of Medjugorje in Bosnia ten days ago. The man from Fermanagh in Northern Ireland reportedly became suspicious after seeing a little blonde girl with a dark haired couple, who he felt could not be her parents. "I'm sure that this child was not theirs and I'm convinced it could have been Madeleine," he said at the weekend. "She was very agitated and sobbing." The man, a father of six, who does not want to be named, told police he heard the child say in English: "I want my Daddy," before being "shoved" into a car and driven away. "The instant I saw her my heart skipped a beat because it immediately struck me that she looked like Madeleine McCann," he said. "I got very close to her, right up beside them and was about to speak to the child when the man put his hand over her mouth and shoved her into the car. "He was pushing her into the back seat and was yelling in some language I didn't understand that wasn't English. "But my blood ran cold when I heard her cry, 'I want my daddy'." "I was filled with panic. I knew I had to do something," he said. He wrote down the number-plate of the car - a Volkswagon Golf - and went to the local police station to report the incident. But he said that because of language difficulties he was unable to make a full statement. The witness was on holiday in the Bosnia-Herzegovina town with his wife and two-year-old and had visited the church of St James on November 1. The place attracts Catholic Pilgrims after a series of supposed apparitions of the Virgin Mary were reported there in the early 1980s. On returning home he alerted British police and called a hotline that has been set up by the private detective agency hired by the Kate and Gerry McCann in a bid to find their daughter. Metodo 3, a Barcelona-based company which claims to have a 100-per-cent success rate in finding lost children, said they would be following up the report. It is the latest in a long string of alleged sightings of the missing four-year-old, all of which have come to nothing. In the six months since she disappeared from an apartment in the Algarve holiday resort of Praia da Luz, she has been "spotted" in neighbouring Spain and nearby Morocco as well as further a field in Malta and Belgium. Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for the McCanns said yesterday: "We are aware that there has been a potential sighting in Bosnia and our investigators are treating it as a priority.

FRIENDS of Kate and Gerry McCann have been told to prepare to be made official suspects as they face further questioning by the Portuguese police. Detectives want to clarify a series of inconsistencies in the statements of seven friends who were dining with the McCanns on the evening of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Their lawyers have now warned them that they may be “arguidos”, or suspects. “It would be a procedural matter, so that they could ask them more probing questions,” said a source close to the legal team. “But they need to be prepared because people in the UK might not see it like that.” The McCanns’ lawyers are also examining the results of independent tests on the family’s hire car. Police sources have claimed that sniffer dogs found “bodily fluids” in the boot that were a match with Madeleine’s DNA. According to the source, independent tests conducted on behalf of the McCanns have found the DNA “does not conclusively match Madeleine’s”. The source said: “We are happy that the results are supportive of our assertion.” Last week it was claimed that detectives were focusing on three “windows of opportunity” directly linked to the McCanns’ movements before and during dinner on the evening of May 3, suggesting police remain convinced they were involved in their daughter’s death. Alipio Ribeiro, national director of the Policia Judiciaria, said last month that formal letters requesting interviews with the friends of the McCanns had been drawn up. Four of the seven are thought to be of particular interest to the detectives. The most important witnesses are Russell O’Brien, a hospital consultant from Exeter, and his girlfriend, Jane Tanner. O’Brien was away from the table for at least 15 minutes and Kate McCann discovered that her daughter was missing 10 minutes later. O’Brien believes the interview will be a chance to clear his name and says he was looking after his daughter, who had a stomach upset. Tanner insists that she discovered Madeleine had disappeared only when she heard shouting outside her apartment as the family searched for their child.
