when this mystery is resolved there are going to be plenty of recriminations to go around....the local police really messed up the investigation from the start.

Madeleine police 'inexperienced'

Madeleine McCann has been missing for a weekThe grandmother of Madeleine McCann has said Portuguese police made mistakes at the start of the hunt for her possibly because they were "inexperienced".
Susan Healey said the three-year-old's parents had found it difficult to communicate to police what had happened when they raised the alarm.
But she said the family had to move on and pray for someone to come forward.
Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, a week ago.
Mrs Healey told Sky News that the McCanns, who are Catholic, were drawing strength from each other, as well as prayers, support, sympathy and kindness.
"They can pull it together when they have to, but obviously there are times when they are very distraught," she said.
Map of resort
Mrs Healey added that the inexperience of the Portuguese police possibly led to mistakes initially, but added that debating what went wrong "doesn't achieve anything".
"We just have to move on and just pray that because of the publicity, for which we're grateful, somebody will come forward."
Mrs Healey also countered criticism from those who say the couple were wrong to leave their children alone in the holiday apartment while they ate dinner at a nearby restaurant.
She said they did not need pressure from people saying they had made a mistake.

MADELEINE APPEAL
Madeleine's family have created a poster appealing for people with information to call Crimestoppers

They know this was a mistake but it was not child neglect, she added.
On Wednesday, Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate, issued a statement, saying: "We are grateful to all of those currently taking part in the search for our daughter Madeleine.
"At present we are channelling all of our emotions and all of our efforts into the steps that are being taken to secure Madeleine's safe return."
Meanwhile, a sexually-motivated abduction is emerging as the main line of inquiry for police investigating the child's disappearance, BBC correspondent Matthew Presland said.
Police have also been handed out CCTV footage showing a woman with a girl fitting Madeleine's description at a service station just a few miles from where she was abducted.

Show reconsiders kidnap plot
The woman was said to be urging the girl to say "thank you" to staff, but the youngster had appeared reluctant.
British child-abduction experts have been in Portugal to assist the investigation.
Later, the Anglican church in Praia da Luz will hold a prayer vigil for Madeleine.
Its vicar, Father Hain Hubbard, said: "We all have deep fears and absolute hope."
Madeleine is believed to have been taken from her bed last Thursday evening while her parents were eating at a nearby restaurant.
They had been regularly checking on her and their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, before she went missing.
An online appeal to help find Madeleine has also been set up.
The appeal by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and the Virtual Global Taskforce is available in English, Portuguese and Spanish on http://www.ceop.gov.uk.
Crimestoppers have also set up an international number - +44 1883 731 336 - which people with information can call anonymously.

Sorry Mrs. Healey I disagree it is neglect. Who in their right mind would leave their 3 babies all under the age of 4 alone for any amount of time period.

The picture of the apartment is telling straight line to the exit this was planned and they knew these parent left their children alone to go to dinner at night, my guess someone who lives or works right there.

If it isn't a sexually motavated kidnapping it may be a women who wanted her for her own daughter she is so very cute.::vsad::

I'm praying they will find her somehow.

This very subject is being covered on my site too, but has taken a very different swing.  I thought you might be interested to read these posts.

(Sorry to link twice in one night Frank, but this is a very interesting take on the way people seem to think and apportion blame from our 2 continents).

So glad you posted that Pussycat, I don't see how heaping a whole load of anger at the parents is going to make this any better...they still have 2 children to care for.

Having come from a family where one of 'ours' was abducted everytime something like this is in the news. (it happens every year, James Bulger and Holly and Jessica to name 2 cases)it bring all the memories flooding back.

Please god they find her, and all my empathy and best wishes to the parents...we all make mistakes.. no one can punish them like they will be punishing themselves.

We all want this beautiful child found alive that is what I pray for each night.

It's different here in the US mistakes like this are considered criminal its that simple. Granted these parent will blame themselves the rest of their lives, and they should.

Sorry I'm a Mother, Aunt, and a Grandmother who has traveled with family just for the specific purpose of watching and caring for my loved one's while my Sister and her Husband went out at night in Spain, Italy, Paris and many other European countries because they would never leave my Niece's alone for one minute.

How hard would it have been to arrange for child care while they went to dinner. I would say it was a pretty selfish move on her parents part that may have cost them their daughters life.

Here in the State no child under the age of 11 or 12 is to be left unsupervised without an adult present period for any amount of time it is a law.

I may be a tough ol gal but when it comes to the saftey and welfare of our children you try very, very, very, hard not to make mistakes that could endanger your children 24 hours a day. That is our job as parent, aunts, uncle, grandparents their lives are in our hands.

Actually in the states most kid don't walk any where by themselves any more, sad but true. They are either bussed in, driven our walked with an adult to school, or one mother is in charge of walking. Car pools are big here.

I would say in most cases not all kids don't walk to school alone or with friend till they are in middle school.

That's so sad though, they have more chance of being killed in an RTA than by a paedophile/abductor.

Cops hunting abducted girl criticized
An English girl -- who should be celebrating her 4th birthday Saturday -- has been missing for more than a week after being snatched from a Portuguese vacation resort. Her anguished parents today pleaded again for her return. The British media meanwhile, descended on the vacation area and slammed police, who they reported would rather sit out a rain shower in their cars than man roadblocks.

this baby's 4th birthday was saturday. i can't imagine how the parents feel. nomatter what mistake they made, they will live with the horror forever and flagellate themselves until they die. if she was taken by a pedophile ring, as speculated, in most instances she will be killed when they finish with her. she could be anywhere by now if she is alive. she is one of many children missing. but the publicity is international now, and the reward is huge. i hope she's alive. but despair that she is.

I would never take my 5 year old daughter on holiday and leave her on her own for ANY period of time.

That in the current climate is completely unacceptable behaviour from the parents, I don't deny their worry and concern but they should not have left their young children on their own. If they wan't time alone they should have booked a cheaper holiday closer to home so they could leave the kids behind with babysitter/childminders/family members etc.

Unfortunately I believe the missing girl is dead, children her age don't go missing for that long and turn up alive, the parents have made appeals and said prayers (a lot fo good that will do), I am sad for them for their loss but they must take some responsibility instead of blaming the local police authorities who I believe are doing all they can.

I agree with you Ninga this could have been avoided totally if they would of place their children's safety first not second and hired a babysitter or had dinner in the room with friends. Hind sight is 20/20 but this was a selfish move on their parts.

I dread coming here to read what has been posted for I fear LC will have posted that they have found her dead, breaks my heart what a beautiful little girl.

It is a terrible case but I think the media overload has been unprecedented.

I'm fairly sure the poor little mite is no longer with us, but the media attention is quite frankly unwarranted and almost vulture like, I hope there is a slim chance she is still alive but I fear the worst.

I also hope the media can now leave this case alone so the authorities can do their best to try and find her as opposed to appearing at endless press conferences,

Is the coverage "vulture like" in Great Britain?

Hmmm.  I don't have television reception thus I've no idea how the American media is pouncing on this story.
