i never thought he was good for it. Madeleine suspect gets items back Robert Murat strenuously denies any involvementMadeleine McCann official suspect Robert Murat says he has had computers and other possessions seized by Portuguese police returned to him. The 34-year-old Briton said the move was a "very positive sign" for him. However, he has still not been officially cleared and remains a formal suspect in the case, or "arguido". Mr Murat lives near the apartment from where Madeleine, of Rothley, Leics, disappeared aged three in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May last year. 'Very happy' Mr Murat said: "It is a very positive sign, there's no doubt about that whatsoever. "Why would they return something if it was in the middle of being investigated in any way, shape or form? "We are very happy to have the computers back, and I hope I will have my arguido status dropped very shortly." Mr Murat said he was considering taking legal action over allegedly libellous stories printed about him in the newspapers. It comes after Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, won a libel settlement and apology from Express Newspapers for suggesting they were involved in their daughter's disappearance. Mr Murat, who was questioned by police 11 days after Madeleine went missing before he was made a suspect, strenuously denies any involvement.

McCanns angry over Madeleine leak Kate and Gerry McCann have been promoting a child alert system The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have responded angrily to publication of leaked transcripts of interviews with Portuguese police last year. The transcripts suggest that on the morning she disappeared she asked why her mother did not come when the children were crying the night before. Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the leak was a "deliberate smear". Kate and Gerry McCann have been in Brussels promoting a new EU-wide monitoring system for missing children. 'Undermine work' Mr Mitchell said: "For a document covered by Portugal's judicial secrecy laws, to be leaked to the Spanish media on the very day they went to the European Parliament, is stretching all sense of belief to believe it's anything other than a deliberate smear." He added: "This was the sort of relevant detail that Kate and Gerry put to the police immediately, and that's been in the files for 11 months and it emerges on the day they go to Europe. "This was a blatant attempt to undermine their work in Europe." The couple called for the Portuguese Justice Ministry to launch an internal inquiry into the leak which breaches the country's strict judicial laws. They [Kate and Gerry McCann] had seen no evidence and heard no evidence that she was crying ![]() Clarence Mitchell McCanns' spokesman Mr Mitchell described Madeleine's words as a "short aside". He said: "Madeleine came out and said, 'Why didn't you come to me and Sean [Madeleine's younger brother] when we were crying last night?' "Now, Kate and Gerry were puzzled by that because they'd been checking her every half an hour and they had seen no evidence and heard no evidence that she was crying. "Nor was she disturbed when she was checked each time. "Equally, one of the friends, Rachael Oldfield, was in the apartment next door in a bedroom adjacent to the wall where Madeleine was in her bedroom and she heard no crying at all all night." The McCanns have been at the European Parliament as part of a campaign to create a dedicated alert system for abducted children. The couple said it worked well in the US where hundreds of children had been recovered, and in France where it had been used five times and all five children had been found. Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, went missing aged three on holiday in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May last year.

surprise surprise: McCanns 'rethink Portugal return' Madeleine McCann's parents might not return to Portugal to assist a police reconstruction, amid claims of a smear campaign, says their spokesman. Kate and Gerry McCann believe Portuguese police leaked transcripts of their interviews to the media. One excerpt suggests on the morning of her disappearance on 3 May last year, Madeleine asked why her mother did not come when she was crying in the night. The couple want a full inquiry by Portuguese authorities into the leak. Although talks about their return to Portugal to help police piece together the events of the night Madeleine disappeared are still ongoing, the couple are now less willing to co-operate. Nobody, but nobody, regrets more than they what happened ![]() Clarence Mitchell Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "All this nonsense over the last 24 or 36 hours does not in any way endear them to the idea of going back." The McCanns want the Portuguese Ministry of Justice to look into whether the interviews were deliberately slipped to a Spanish journalist on the day they were in Brussels to promote a new EU-wide monitoring system for missing children. Any such leak would breach the country's strict judicial laws. The McCanns' local MP, Stephen Dorrell, said he would ask the Foreign Office to take up the matter with Portuguese authorities. The Foreign Office said any approach to the Portuguese police or authorities would be done in private. Meanwhile the couple's Portuguese lawyers are also understood to be protesting to the authorities. Mr Mitchell described the leak as a "deliberate smear" and "a blatant attempt to undermine their work in Europe". Private jets He said Madeleine's words had been a "short aside" and her parents were puzzled why despite checking on her every half an hour, they had heard no evidence she was crying. Mr Mitchell said the McCanns knew they had made a mistake in leaving their three children unattended while on holiday in a Portuguese holiday resort. "Nobody, but nobody, regrets more than they what happened," he said. "And they possibly will have to live with that regret for the rest of their lives," he added. He also dismissed reports in the Portuguese media that the McCanns' friends, who were dining with them on the night of Madeleine's disappearance, were making demands in return for co-operating with the reconstruction. "To suggest they want private jets or luxury hotel accommodation as part of any return is utter rubbish," he said.

one year today PRAIA DA LUZ, Portugal — Portuguese police are still gathering evidence in their investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and have not yet decided whether to bring charges or drop the case, Portugal's most senior detective said Saturday. The British girl vanished from this resort town in southern Portugal one year ago Saturday, a few days before her fourth birthday. "At this stage nothing has been determined regarding possible charges or closing the case," Alipio Ribeiro, head of the Policia Judiciaria investigative department, told the Portuguese national news agency Lusa. "The PJ continues to gather and analyze all available evidence," Ribeiro was quoted as saying. Police have named her parents, Kate and Gerry, and local man Robert Murat as formal suspects in the case. They have all denied involvement. Church services were due to be held in Praia da Luz and at the McCanns' home town in England to mark the one-year anniversary. Kate and Gerry McCann, who launched a worldwide online campaign to find their daughter, were not expected to travel to Portugal for the service. They returned to England in September, a few days after they were named as suspects. However, Kate McCann has written a message that is to be read out during the service at the beachside chapel in Praia da Luz and Gerry McCann's brother was expected to attend. The service was to be given by Father Haynes Hubbard, the Anglican vicar of Portugal's Algarve region. He still wears a plastic yellow Find Madeleine campaign bracelet on his wrist. In England, the Archbishop of York has penned a special prayer for Madeleine McCann to mark the anniversary.

'Madeleine is dead' claims ex-police chief in charge of the case Goncalo Amaral says he is 'convinced' Madeleine McCann is dead The former detective in the Madeleine McCann case has claimed the four-year old is dead. Goncalo Amaral, 48, said he was convinced Madeleine will not be found alive and said that British officers only chased leads Kate and Gerry McCann wanted following up. Amaral quit the force and handed over his gun and badge to bosses on Monday evening after 28 years as a police officer. He is now preparing to publish an "explosive" book on the case. The father-of-three was in charge of the Madeleine investigation for five months before he was kicked off the probe for publicly criticising his British counterparts. 'I am not saying that the English police were under the command of the McCanns, but they were influenced', he said. 'In a way, we were all influenced by the campaign that they organised, according to which the girl was alive and had to be found.' Amaral was thought to be the source behind many of the stories in Portugal suggesting the McCanns were involved in their daughter's disappearance. He was also photographed enjoying long boozy lunches while in charge of the country's biggest ever missing persons case. Gerry and Kate McCann influenced the investigation into their daughter's disappearance, it is claimed On his final day as an officer he enjoyed a two-hour lunch in the seaside town of Portimao, newspaper 24 Horas reported. He later marked his early retirement with a dinner with two police colleagues from Lisbon. The disgraced former chief has finished writing a book, True Lies, which he plans to publish as soon as a judge lifts a secrecy order surrounding the case. Amaral told 24 Horas the book "is ready" and said he plans to "carry on working in the area of criminal investigation, perhaps as a consultant." He added: 'I am proud to have worked with the Judicial Police and to have worked with so many good people and excellent professionals.' Amaral's book is said to contain "explosive elements" about the police investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. Amaral's book claims to contain 'explosive elements' about missing Madeleine The detective's lawyer Paulo Santos said previously: 'It's not going to be speculative, but rather factual, with accounts from someone who lived the case one hundred per cent.' Amaral told colleagues he quit the force in order to recover his "freedom of speech". His book, the first inside account of the investigation, is certain to be an instant best-seller. Amaral was kicked off the case last October 2 after accusing British police of being too close to Gerry and Kate McCann. He claimed British officers only chased up leads Madeleine's parents wanted following up. He was also overheard in a cafe accusing Gerry and Kate McCann of accidentally killing their daughter. He was replaced by current chief investigator Paulo Rebelo. Strict Portuguese judicial secrecy laws mean the Maddie case files have never been made public. But attorney general Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro has said the secrecy will be lifted this month. As well as being kicked off the Madeleine investigation, he was also removed from his post as head of the Judicial Police in the Algarve town of Portimao and transferred to nearby Faro. Amaral, who lives in Portimao, is facing trial for allegedly covering up the torture of a woman who was later convicted of killing her daughter in 2004. He will be tried for allegedly lying about the treatment of Leonor Cipriano following her daughter's disappearance from the village of Figueira near to where Madeleine went missing. Leonor claims officers beat her into a false confession by punching and kicking her repeatedly, placing plastic plastic bags over her head and forcing her to kneel on glass ashtrays. Leonor and her brother Joao were subsequently convicted of Joana's murder after a trial and jailed for 16 years. Amaral is charged with negligence and perjury. His close friend and former Judicial Police inspector Paulo Cristovao has become a media star in his native Portugal after taking early retirement from the force. He writes regularly for Portuguese newspapers and magazines and has penned two novels including a fictional account of the Madeleine McCann investigation called The Star of Madeleine. Fictional officers bring the 180-page novel to a close by staring out at the Atlantic Ocean after a massive land search for Madeleine. Cristovao is also due to stand trial with Amaral and three other men in the Leonor Cipriano case.

Leicestershire Police have agreed to release files on the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann to her parents. The release of evidence to Kate and Gerry McCann comes after the couple dropped a High Court bid to force it. Portuguese media last week reported the investigation would be closed because of a lack of evidence. Madeleine, of Rothley, Leics, went missing in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007. She was three years old at the time. Leicestershire Police have been involved in the search for Madeleine since shortly after she went missing. The McCanns wanted to obtain the information to help in their private investigation into the case. The family's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, speaking outside the High Court in London said the information related to calls from members of the public early in the investigation soon after Madeleine disappeared. ![]() I ponder whether that person has a conscience or any feeling of guilt or remorse... about the hurt that has been caused to an innocent little girl ![]() Mrs Justice Hogg High Court judge He said: "Kate and Gerry McCann welcome this compromise reached with the police. "If we hadn't gone to court we wouldn't have these 81 pieces [of information handed over] coming in. "That information now goes to our private investigators, who will work on it, all as a priority. "Anyone of those could unlock the information that could lead to Madeleine being found." right. try the bottom of the sea. 'Come forward now' Madeleine's parents were not at the hearing. Mrs Justice Hogg, presiding, said she had not requested their attendance because "they have suffered enough and I wished to ease their burden". She urged anyone with information on the case to come forward: "There is, of course, one person who knows what has happened to Madeleine and where she may be found. "I ponder about that person - whether that person has a heart and might understand what it must be like for Madeleine to have been taken and secreted from her parents and siblings and those she loved and felt secure with. "Whether that person has a conscience or any feeling of guilt or remorse or even cares about the hurt that has been caused to an innocent little girl, and whether that person has a faith or belief and what explanation or justification they might give to God. "I entreat that person, whoever they may be, to show mercy and compassion and come forward now and tell us where Madeleine is to be found. I hope she will be found soon, alive and well." Case 'shelved' On Tuesday, the Portuguese attorney general denied a decision had yet been taken to close the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. It followed Portuguese newspaper reports that police would "archive" or "shelve" the case, meaning they would no longer devote resources to investigating it, because of a lack of evidence. Kate and Gerry McCann remain as official suspects - "arguidos" in Portuguese legal jargon - in the inquiry, along with a third man, Robert Murat. If the case were to be closed, the McCann family spokesman said, their arguido status should be lifted "as a priority" and all the files of information held by investigators handed over.

McCanns' £1m search for Madeleine An investigation by Portuguese police failed to find Madeleine McCann Kate and Gerry McCann have spent more than £1m trying to find their daughter Madeleine, the couple have said. Advertising, website costs, legal fees and payments to several detective agencies made up the bulk of the bill. And Mrs McCann told Portuguese newspaper Expresso: "We can't set a limit. A child does not have a price. We will pay what we have to." Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared aged three on holiday in the Algarve on 3 May last year. Mrs McCann said: "It just takes one person to make the one phone call we so hope for. We know she was abducted and believe someone knows or suspects something. "We want to find her alive. But if she is dead we want to know. There's nothing in the police report that indicates anything bad has happened to her." The £1m spent so far was described as a "broad figure" by family spokesman Clarence Mitchell, and came from public donations and the proceeds of a £550,000 legal payout from Express newspapers. The family has received additional financial support from Cheshire-based businessman Brian Kennedy. There is a further £500,000 remaining in the Find Madeline fund, Mr Mitchell added. Madeleine photos In the interview, the couple also said their three-year-old twins, who talk about their sister coming home, had helped them deal with what had happened. Mrs McCann said: "There are photos of Madeleine all around the house and every day we speak to the twins about her. "She is an important part of our lives. Sean and Amelie [the twins] still speak about her and involve her in their games." In the interview, Mrs McCann criticised detective Goncalo Amaral who led the police search for Madeleine and later wrote a book on the case. "All I will say about this, and because I'm not going to waste my time on Mr Amaral, is that as a professional and as a person his behaviour has been a disgrace." Mr McCann said they "profoundly regret" that someone saw in their actions the opportunity to take Madeleine, but insisted the couple had not been negligent. yeah, they only left the kids alone to go drink wine and have dinner. lying bastards.
