SHE LEFT THE BABY FOR A SALE!! FORT MYERS, Fla. — A 63-year-old woman blamed a great sale for the reason she left her small child locked inside a sweltering car for an hour. Eileen Amy Politano, of North Fort Myers, Fla., was charged with felony child neglect Friday after leaving an 11-month-old girl in a car while she went into a grocery store. Store employees said they saw the girl crying in the car and were able to rescue her before police arrived. Outside temperature were upward of 85 degrees. Politano told police she intended to run into the store for a few minutes to buy some meat for dinner, but said there were too many specials to pass up. When medical personnel asked Politano to give the child something to drink, she reportedly reached into her car and grabbed a bottle of spoiled formula. Politano was released on $1,500 bond.

It is so sad that children are often afterthoughts to "busy" parents. Every summer I read about children dying of heatstroke in Japan, and the story that got me the maddest was of a mother who left her kid in the car to play pachinko. She said she left the engine running with the A/C on, but she didn't go to check on her child during her 5 hours of playing pachinko! In 2003 a local university's Department of Education prof left his 10-month old toddler in his car when he went arrived at work at 8:30 AM, and the child was found dead just after noon. He said he usually didn't take his son to daycare and forgot about him. I'm sure he feels horrible, and I really doubt he ever meant to intentionally harm his son. All the same, I wonder how a well-educated person could be so concerned with his work that he forgot his own son.

this one left her two kids in a car all day, it was 98 degrees outside. then she concealed their bodies! HANAHAN, S.C. — Two toddlers were found dead in trash bags under a sink and their mother was taken to a hospital for evaluation, authorities said Tuesday. The mother took the children to work with her Monday and left them in the car all day, Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad told The Associated Press. Rhoad said he did not immediately know the cause of death but autopsies would be done Tuesday. The toddlers, a 1-year-old girl and a 4-year old boy, were found when authorities responded to a domestic disturbance call Monday night, authorities said.

I heard this report on the radio, have not found a corresponding article yet. A toddler died after his mom FORGOT he was still in the car when she went to work. She did not notice till after work when she came back to her car. She said she forgot he was still there, and not dropped off at day care. No charges have been filed yet. OK, I have forgotten my keys in my car...and papers flor work, even groceries. But how in God's name do you forget your KID is in the car?

We hear that excuse a lot in the news. "I was so pre-occupied with work I just forgot." Did she forget to eat lunch? Did she forget to lock her car? Probably not.

Infant Dies After Mom Forgets to Drop Him Off at Day Care, Leaves Him in Car Friday, August 03, 2007 ARCADE, N.Y. — A 5-month-old baby died after his mother forgot to drop him off at day care and left him in her hot car all day while she worked. Lynn Brol, 32, of Franklinville arrived at her job around 8 a.m. Thursday and did not realize she had left her son, Brayden, in the car until she left work at 5 p.m., police in the rural Wyoming County village of Arcade said. The child was already dead when the distraught mother called 911, Chief John Laird said. He said Brol usually dropped her son off at a day-care facility a quarter mile away from her office at a debt collection company. No charges were immediately filed. Thursday's temperatures climbed into the low 90s, with high humidity. The vehicle's inside air temperature likely exceeded 130 degrees, said Jan Null, an adjunct meteorology professor at San Francisco State University who researches vehicle temperatures and tracks instances of children left in hot vehicles. Brayden was the 19th child to die in a hot car this summer in the U.S. and the first in New York state, Null said. The number of such deaths has risen dramatically since the mid-1990s, totaling around 340 in the past 10 years. Experts said the increase coincides with the practice of putting children in the back seat, where they are more easily forgotten. That change was intended to protect kids after juvenile air-bag deaths peaked in 1995.

LC..I started a thread about the lady in Arcade who went to work, if you want to merge it here. It is over in Open Talk. It is not far from here, about 50 miles. Here is the write up in our local paper. Click on the POST COMMENT link to read what other readers have posted. Forgotten infant left inside hot car dies Franklinville mother discovers 5-month-old after day at work Victoria E. Freile Staff writer class=summaryPost Comment (August 4, 2007) — A 5-month-old boy died Thursday in Wyoming County when his mother left him in her car all day after forgetting to drop him off at day care. Police in the Wyoming County village of Arcade said Lynn Brol, 32, of Franklinville, Cattaraugus County, arrived at her job at Pioneer Credit about 8 a.m. and didn't realize she had left her son, Brayden, in her car until she left work at 5 p.m. Police Chief John Laird said Brol called 911, but the child already had died. Brol usually dropped her son off at a nearby day care. Laird said no charges have been filed against Brol. "It's an ongoing investigation," Laird said. "The facts aren't really in question. It wasn't anything done intentionally." The investigation has been transferred to the office of Wyoming County District Attorney Gerald Stout, Laird said. Stout was not available for comment on Friday. The National Weather Service said the temperature reached 95 in the Rochester area Thursday. On a 95-degree day, the temperature in a parked vehicle can skyrocket in a matter of minutes, said John Ricci, a Monroe County Public Health Department spokesman. On days above 86, car interiors can reach 134 to 154 degrees, even when windows are cracked, he said. Seventy-five percent of the increased heat occurs within the first five minutes, he said. Forty-two children nationwide died in unattended vehicles because of excessive heat in 2003, according to The Journal of Pediatrics. OK, regarding the story from this area, whre the mom forgot her baby in the car all day, and the baby died. News today is she will not be charged in the death. Here is the article: Mother Not Charged in Infant's Death Last Update: Aug 13, 2007 5:12 PM (Arcade, N.Y.) - A mother's own grief is one reason she will not be charged in the death of her infant son. That baby died after being left in a hot car all day, earlier this month. The mother, Lynn Brol, went to work and said she forgot to drop off her five- month-old son at day care. In announcing his decision not to charge Brol, the Wyoming County D.A. said, “I will leave it to a greater power than the state--to address the facts of this case." The D.A. said he also considered the fact that the baby showed no signs of abuse and appeared to be well cared for. Last edited on 11:21 pm by Marie5656 ![]()

I heard the other day that the deaths have risen dramatically since front passenger seat airbags. Due to the parents having to put them in the back. There are now all sorts of "alarms" in development.

This only applies to driver side airbags any child under the age of 12 or 100lbs has to sit in the back period if you have driver side air bags. Infants and toddler are and always have been in the back seat with their infant seat face the back seat that is the law in California anyway. Any child under the age of 12 should be in the back even if you don't have driver side air bags it is safer. They should actually be in the middle of the back seat if possible belted in if needed with a booster car seat. ALWAY children should have their seat belts on. Sweet Pea Wrote:

I don't think so, Carla. The passenger side airbags were the ones that were endangering kids. The driver side airbags would/do hit the DRIVER, not the little kid in his car seat! But I haven't read the code. I do know the car seat weight was raised from "over 4 or over 40" to "over 6 or over 60) a while back. In any case, it's safer back there for them unless the parent forgets them, so alarms would be a help.

I agree they are safer in the back seat. If alarms would help them remember they have kids in the car that is a good thing as well. Sweet Pea wrote:
