Can someone explain this to me?  I mean, okay, if someone commits a lesser offense (bank robbery, some kind of manslaughter (whereby they were just stupid, and not malicious, per se) or some other kind of non-heinous crime) I can see putting them on suicide watch if they're suicidal.  You don't want someone killing themselves just because they're sad they're in prison, I guess.  But if somone gets convicted for stone-cold murder....I mean,   Why bother putting them on suicide watch?  If they want to off themselves, let that be a form of community service.  It still, to this day, galls me that they put that b*tch Susan Smith on suicide watch!  The best thing she could've done for the world is hang herself in her cell.

Sorry.  It's Saturday night and I've got time to think about sh*t like this...which is kinda sad in itself.

the thing is Brian, that respective jails and prisons have liability for the safety/security of those in custody. it's all about liability.

I know you're right.  It's just that, I think people like her make suicidal gestures just for the attention and sympathy.  She was an attention whore.  That's why she did what she did in the first place:  To keep the attention of her boyfriend/paramour/whatever.  And then that whole reprehensible story she made up for sympathy...

I think a lot of them are like that:  They just want to jerk the system around since they've got time to kill (no pun intended).

An inmate in prison is considered property of the D.O.C.  And those inmates who have people on the outside would make many lives a living hell if their loved one offed themself while inside.

I can see where you're going with the community service, Brian, but let's make sure they're guilty before we encourage them to kill themselves. I do agree; it would save lots of time, money and heartache if some of these people would just do away with themselves.  IF they are guilty of what they have been accused.

Absolutely, UTR.  My comment was really aimed at those cases like Susan Smith or Jeffrey Dahmer or other cases, where you've got the person dead to rights and what they did was mind-bogglingly monstrous.  And I know that people are locked up while their cases are still being adjudicated, as well.  But there are a lot of cases where the guilt of the person isn't even in question by the defense.

I absolutely didn't mean that everyone accused, or even necessarily everyone convicted, is guilty.

if someone SAYS they're suicidal, even if it's attention-seeking, it has to be treated seriously. they soon find out that being on a watch is a miserable experience.

the ones who really are intent on suicide don't say anything, they just do it.
