This is just such a sad case.  I can't for the life of me understand how this stuff happens.  It's just... really sad...

Hi, LC.

I do think it's possible to strangle yourself.  Technically, certain forms of hanging are strangulation (if the noose isn't tied in such a way to break your neck).  And there was that case a few months ago where the woman in the airport managed to strangle herself with her handcuffs.  All it really takes to do it is to tighten something around your neck in such a way that you can't get it off, right?

other than successfully (or accidently) hanging oneself, and that freak thing at airport, i don't know how someone could intentionally strangle themselves...you'd pass out before you'd die, and then start breathing again. in MOST cases. she was strangled and bloody. the autistic 'child' was 20 years old. certainly was annoyed that mom tried to strangle him. it pretty much points to one thing, and that's why authorities are hesitant to speak more about circumstances of her death.

My bet is still on the mother killing herself.  I can see how you'd pass out before you die, but I could picture situations where you passed out before you cleared your airway.  You could, for example, tie a ligature around two heavy objects and loop the rope around your neck.  It does sound like a pretty stupid way to kill yourself, though.

The reason I don't think the autistic "kid" is good for it is because all of the autistic people I've seen have been very passive.  The ones I've seen, if you were aggressive towards them, would sort of curl up in a fetal position and sit in the corner.  I just don't see an autistic person acting that aggressively.

well anything is possible! but in this instance, note police report, "marks", not a ligature present. just my opinion, but i think an autistic person can be provoked into rage.

When police arrived they found Sheila on the kitchen floor with ligature marks around her neck and blood on her face. Police learned that her son was home at the time and started to slowly piece together what had happened.

I'm with LC on this one I think the kid did it. Autistic children can become very enraged if provoked.

DES MOINES (AP) Police say an Ankeny woman who was found dead a few weeks ago strangled herself with a bungee cord after trying to kill her 20-year-old autistic son.

well this is one-in-a-million, a bungee cord! i'm still trying to visualize it! Brian gets the prize! :iwon:

it is VERY unusual for females to kill themselves in a violent way. they almost never use guns or hanging. they usually want to leave an attractive corpse, and use pills. i guess it all depends on how really nuts they are.

Who would of thunk it. A Bungee cord they barely say hooked to things as it is. Where did she hook it so she would have enough room under her to hang. The are smooth to boot, must of had it place just right to strangle herself.

It's certainly not common for a woman to kill herself violently.  But it's even less common, from what I've seen, for an autistic person to lash out like that.  When I've seen autistic people get frightened, they almost always withdraw.  I suppose it's not impossible for an autistic person to go into survival mode, but if that were the case, I would've expected a more violent scene.

A bungee cord seems like a really weird thing to strangle yourself with.  I would think you would need to tie it even tighter than a normal rope, given the fact that it would tend to stretch.

I'm just glad the autistic guy was okay.    If she wanted to die, that's her own business, but trying to take her son with her is low.
