Would you support court-ordered drug "interrogations" of suspects, using something like sodium pentothal, or hypnosis, or some other means that isn't torture, but removes a suspects desire to hide the truth? Something with no permanent effects, no marks, etc. I'm thinking along the lines of something that would require a lot of review and very compelling evidence of probable cause beforehand (probably far exceeding the standard required for say, a search warrant) Could require the signatures of two judges, etc --

i voted no, it's too invasive. even the polygraph is an investigative tool, and cannot be forced on anyone. i'd rather rely on good old-fashioned gathering of evidence.

I voted no. People under the influence of sodium pentathol, hypnosis, etc., are too vulnerable to suggestion. It's not a way to get accurate information. If coercive tactics are used to get information, those tactics should at least get reasonably accurate results. For that, you need the person to be fully conscious and thinking. You're better off (from an information extraction standpoint) applying pain and then verifying the information than you are to drug somebody up to loosen their tongue. NB: I'm not saying I'm in favor of "torture" (depending on how you define the word). But stressing someone into giving you information is a more reliable way of getting it than trying to get through the back door.

NO! With our government and legal system, it would get out of hand and start being abused within the first month or so! Laws being passed ALWAYS have a ton of loop holes that aren't privy to the public who may be voting on these laws.............Now where I WOULD approve, might be if an innocent person could request it, and be allowed to use this method to help prove innocence!

aside from all the considerations mentioned, think of the constitutional nightmare! we can't even inject those lawfully sentenced to death. it might 'hurt'.

whimper.... so I'm guessing this means ya'll won't want to vote for me for President or anything? And actually I agree- Both with Brian and FGP -- Not only is it currently not accurate enough, but it's also one more thing that'd get abused. It just would be nice if we had a super reliable Constitutional way to find out if some particular person did something or not and GET IT OVER WITH, and have more open and shut cases and trials. These cases where the guy, the cops, and everyone KNOWS that he did it--- yet he can 'not incriminate himself', and both legal precedent and his defense lawyer using every trick in the book combine to make the guy all but unprosecutable.. And cases go on for months and years, costing the taxpayer millions of dollars..... all because some scumbag and lawyer who KNOW that he did it, and know the system inside and out, work things such that he might get away with it. If you did the crime, you should do the max time as anyone who was caught redhanded. Not these crazy cases that the whackjob ends up geting 1/8th the time someone else did for the SAME crime, because he and his lawyer managed to make it SO hard for the cops and the courts to prove and try him for it. Though as a Baha'i, we're not allowed to run for public office or become a Party member. Defeats the concepts of unity -- since by definition, we're not united with "them folks over there" any more. That's why my posts in here (try anyway) to not be partisan oriented... I try to be an equal opportunity basher..

Right now I'm the only person who has voted "yes". But then I've always had the minority opinion. I don't think it should be, by itself, grounds for conviction or even trial. Corroborating evidence should be conclusive. But truth-serum interrogations will cut down on the amount of lying. As for the earlier remark about constitutional nightmares, I think we should get more serious about eliminating crime. At this point our society is too willing to let criminal activity go on.

Or some unknown allergic reaction. Or sodium pentothal making someone crazy. Or any one of any other hundred possible scenarios that we don't know could happen. Till we have a whole shit-load of human guinea pigs, that is. Aside from all those possibilities, consider the cost. Medical, mental, drug use history, etc., etc. Frankly, IMO, anyone who is "for" this idea is a whackjob.

even if it were feasible, the courts would be a logjam of motions to suppress the 'evidence' for a thousand different reasons. nobody would ever get convicted!
