NEW YORK — An infant girl strapped in a car seat and abandoned in the back of a livery car on a bitterly cold day was declared in excellent health after she was dropped off at a firehouse by the quick-witted driver. Dressed all in pink, with a bow around her head, the brown-eyed, brown-haired baby giggled several times at a news conference Thursday afternoon, where officials introduced her and asked for help in finding her relatives. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says the NYPD is seeking the public's help in identifying the infant girl, but that so far only one person has called its tips hotline. Kelly called the poor response "both troubling and surprising," and said the single call did not "pan out." Klever Sailema, who drives a car affiliated with Tel-A-Car of New York, dropped the baby off at Engine Co. 289 and Ladder Co. 138 in the Corona section of Queens, along with a bag containing baby formula, diapers and clothing. "Considering today's bitter cold, we couldn't be more thrilled that this baby was brought to a safe haven by Mr. Sailema. Thanks to him, the baby received quick medical attention," said Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew W. Daus, adding that Sailema would be honored at the TLC's annual driver recognition ceremony in late March. According to police, Sailema picked up a passenger in Queens. Several blocks later, the fare asked the driver to stop so he could make a phone call. But after he got out, he didn't return, police said. Sailema took the baby, believed to be about six or seven months old, to the firehouse, where firefighters played with her — and even changed her diaper — for about 45 minutes before emergency medical personnel arrived. She was taken to a hospital, where she was declared to be in good health. "The baby was awake, alert, content and in good shape," said Fire Department Lt. Jimmy LoFaso of Engine 289. Officials said she will be turned over to the Administration for Children's Services, which will try to track down any family members. what i do not comprehend is that NY is one of the majority of states that lets people leave unwanted children at hospitals, police stations and fire stations. no questions asked. there is usually an age cutoff however. (you can't leave your rotten teenager!) i hope they find the poor little baby's family.

NEW YORK — A cab driver who made headlines this week when he claimed that a passenger had abandoned a baby in his car was arrested Saturday and charged with making up the tale. Police said the driver, Klever Sailema, was part of a scheme by an overwhelmed Bronx family to abandon the child, who had been born to a 14-year-old girl. The family's ill-conceived plot to turn the child over the city collapsed late Friday night and several people were under arrest early Saturday. The baby's mother has also been identified, but will likely not face charges because of her age, police said. Investigators were still hunting for the child's father, who was believed to be 27 years old, said Police Department spokesman Paul Browne. New York State Federation Of Taxi Drivers Spokesman Fernando Mateo, who had championed Sailema as a hero earlier in the week, said he felt betrayed, but wouldn't condemn the cabbie. "I am looking at a desperate man who was trying to help a desperate family," Mateo said. The arrests were a stunning development in a case that had captivated the city after the adorable baby's pictures were published in newspapers and broadcast on TV. Sailema briefly became a media darling after he dropped the baby off at a Queens fire station Thursday, saying the child, who was about 6 months old, had been left in his car by a stranger. The cabbie told investigators his fare was a nervous-looking man who had gotten in carrying the baby and a diaper bag, then asked the driver to pull over so he could make a phone call, and promptly fled. Sailema even provided enough detail about the man's appearance that police released a sketch of the suspect. He repeated his tale to reporters at a news conference on Friday. Police now say that Sailema was in on the abandonment plot from the start. Authorities said the driver had been persuaded by his 21-year-old girlfriend, Maria Siavichay, of the Bronx, to help her family abandon the baby. Police said Siavichay's brother was the child's father. His name has not yet been released.IF HE'S AN ADULT, HE'S GOING DOWN AS A CHILD MOLESTER, THAT MOTHER WAS 13 WHEN SHE GOT PREGNANT. Sailema was charged with filing a false report. Both he and Siavichay were charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Police said her roommate, Marcelo Vinansaca, 24, of the Bronx, was also charged with obstructing the investigation by giving false information to detectives.

Yikes I would never of thought this was the case. What a story at least the beautiful baby is safe now.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up worn out screaming what a ride.. |

Those people were clearly not thinking properly! There are hundreds, if not thousands of childless couples in NY alone, that would have adopted that beautiful baby in a heartbeat!! Some would even have paid plenty of $$$$$ to get to be first in line to adopt her!!! What a mistake, now they're getting arrested! Guess there was not a brain cell between them all!!! How sad all around!

Why didn't the parents get the father on rape when it happened. I hope they find him he deserve to pay for this.
