CNN) -- A teenage daughter's anger over a forbidden romance may have caused the 16-year-old to kill her mother and two brothers, police said.

Federal investigators sift through the charred remains of a home near Alba, Texas, on Saturday

The killings occurred in the rural East Texas home of Terry and Penny Caffey on Saturday morning, according to a statement released by Rains County Sheriff David Traylor. The home was burned as well as a medical supplies van outside, Traylor said.

In the ashes of the home, authorities found the body of Penny Caffey, 37, and the 8- and 13-year-old boys. All victims were shot and stabbed, police said.

Four suspects are in police custody and have each been charged with three counts of murder. Three suspects were identified as Charlie James Wilkinson, 19; Charles Allen Wade, 20; and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, who is female.

Police did not release the name or mug shot of the other suspect, the Caffey's daughter, because she is a juvenile.

Police believe the motive may have been that the teenage daughter was forbidden to date one of the suspects.

"Early on in the investigation it was revealed that the juvenile and one of the suspects were dating and made to break up," Traylor wrote in a release.

The teenage girl's father, Terry Caffey, who was shot in the head but survived is helping police. Caffey, who is in critical condition, was able to crawl 300 yards to a neighbor's home and later identified one of the suspects.

Carl Johnson, a family friend, told The Associated Press that he saw the bloody trail left by the father who dragged himself to a neighbor's house.

Johnson said the family are musicians and that the boys played guitar and harmonica and the mother is a church piano player. The father often told his daughter that he wanted her to sing at his funeral, Johnson told AP.

"I just thought the whole world of the family," said Johnson, 75. "They were good Christian people. [The father] was like a son of my own."

The killings shocked many in the small east Texas town, the town's mayor said Sunday.

"There hasn't been a murder here in 18 years," said Orvin Carroll, longtime mayor of Alba, Texas -- a town of about 430 people east of Dallas.

"We are all just a little shocked. This is a place where people do not lock their doors. But that is changing," Carroll added.

"We can't believe this could happen to a mother and her children. Not here."

See?  her parents were right, those guys were a bad influence.  Too bad they didn't act quick enough.

All of my students have been informed of the danger of a single negative peer in their life.

Again a loaded gun and knowing where it is has facilitated a family massacre that shouldn't have happened.

In my teens I had massive blow ups with my parents but the option to give in to anger and pick up a loaded gun wasn't available and thank god it wasn't.

Easy access to guns = more gun crime especially of this type.

No doubt there will be several members who disagree with this sentiment even though it is blatantly clear.

"I want and need my gun thank you" if that is the case perhaps you should move somewhere where that is not the case like England for instance, yes we have gun crrime it has increased and is usuallly criminal on criminal, not family get togethers turning into Son of Sam and usually not disgruntled ex-employees "going postal", a phrase orginated from the easy gun laws and the large number of ex-employees taking advantage and shooting up their former colleagues and co-workers.

Just a thought.

Wow....the gun did that all by itself, huh?  And here I thought guns couldn't act of their own free will.  ::scratch::  :dunno:

Immediate availibilty of guns facilitate drunken murders more than fists, knives or any other weapon ever can UTR and you know it !

I have had  one or two drunken "dispuites" with my father in the past, the presence of a loaded gun and two inebriated protaganists ?, who knows what would have happened ?

I have had many heated arguments with my mother in the past, again the presence of a loaded gun in the house could have been fatal.

Like I said before and will continue to say having loaded guns in the house is a baaaddd thing, I could post links to recent incidents of fatal multiple shootings, I won't, you know and when they have taken take place and there have been many examples recently.

Until you change your attitude toward guns these things will continue to happen and innocent people will continue to die because of your archaic and outmoded need for gun ownership which you seem to be obssessed with. I often wonder if you were given the choice between your guns and your family which one you would choose ?

If someone told me I would have to own and maintain a gun unless it was in the defence of my country I would refuse point blank.  Guns are not tools their sole purpose is to injure and destroy life.

I have to agree along with hunting and protection, they are made to kill.

Growing up with guns my entire life, I would agree, and if not for gun education many more would have died. But that does not make guns go away and living in fear of guns does not either.

This is just another example of piss-poor gun management.

And more like lack of common sense.

Only if one of you picked it up and chose to fire it at the other.  The mere presence of a gun has nothing to do with it; it is the choice of the person to pick it up and fire it.

cynicalninja wrote: Until you change your attitude toward guns these things will continue

There is as much chance of me changing my attitude about gun ownership as there is of you getting a sex change operation.  Less, in fact.  I don't know you well enough to say you would never want a sex change operation.  But I can say with 100% certainty that I wll never change my view of gun ownership.

And once again; it is not a need.  I have said that until I am blue in the face, yet you refuse to acknowledge the difference.  It is a right, and a CHOICE not a need.  As for a choice between my guns and my family, thankfully, that is an absurd question and one choice I don't have to make.  I get to have both.

cynicalninja wrote:

Wrong.  Guns gave other purposes, such as to protect your life.  And become proficient with something.  And compete.  I've expended hundreds and hundreds of rounds skeet shooting and showing up the men shooting with me that I'm better than they are!  What a blast skeet shooting is.  If you ever come to the US of A, I'll take you to watch.  You could have fun shooting clay pigeons!

And I'm glad you would choose not to have a gun.  There are some people who don't belong owning them, and by saying that you could have killed one of your parents over some argument if you had one proves to me that you are one that should not.

We've said before that this is a difference of culture.  You and I have gone back and forth on this topic several times.  Neither of us is going to agree with the other on this subject.  And that's fine; we don't have to agree.  But we sure do keep trying, don't we?
