OCALA, Fla. —  Wesley Snipes' attorneys were still arguing for a limited sentence Thursday, hours after the actor's sentencing hearing began on federal tax charges that could land him fines and prison time.

The sentencing in a central Florida court lasted the entire morning without a decision. A jury found him guilty in February of willfully failing to file taxes for three years, in which the government said he owed $2.7 million.

But Snipes' attorneys said in court his tax liability was only $228,000. Even if U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges accepts their argument, sentencing enhancements put Snipes within range of the three-year prison term prosecutors want.

Snipes was acquitted of three identical misdemeanors and two felony charges of tax fraud and conspiracy.

The actor's attorneys said the government's sentencing guidelines aren't fair for tax convictions like his. They want him let off with no prison and no fine.

Snipes' co-defendants, who were convicted on the felony fraud and conspiracy charges, will also be sentenced. Eddie Ray Kahn faces up to 10 years behind bars, while Douglas P. Rosile could be jailed five to six years.

Yes, great idea, let's imprison another very dangerous Black citizen, male no less.

Another victimless crime.  Nowhere in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or any other official document in America, (other than the Tax Bill) does it mandate that a citizen must pay taxes for services provided and paid for.  I hope he pays his taxes and doesn't go to jail.  And maybe his Vampire friends will rescue him in the 11th hour.

If GW Bush and Dickless Cheney can remain free (and laugh at the rest of us Americans) for giving their friends trillions of dollars at taxpayers expense, to do nothing other than rape, pillage and steal,  then no other citizen should do jail time for evading income taxes or underpaying them.  All in the name of bullshit democracy.

not to mention the huge piles of money he has stashed in Switzerland, Antigua and the Isle of Man.

the defense was not credible, i.e. he didn't know he had to pay taxes on money he made in other countries.  bullhockey.

he skated on the felony charges, he got lucky.

his appeal will most likely be based on stats of people who did NOT go to prison on similar misdemeanors. but i doubt he'll win an appeal. fed judges don't like to overturn other fed judges.
