WSM, how does the legal system profit financially by convicting baby rapers/murderers? i'd say society profits whenever those people get put away.

The death penalty is NOT a deterrent.

But who cares ?

If I knew people like Peter Sutcliffe, Dennis Neilsen, Rosemary West, Ian Brady etc, etc, etc were dead I personally would feel better.

How could the death penalty not be a deterrent?  When you carry out the death penalty, you know for damn sure it detered at least one person from committing a murder -- the one you just executed.

As far as anyone else, I think the reason it's not as much of a deterrent as it could be is, frankly, people like their odds.  Look at how many people get convicted of first degree murder who don't get the death penalty.  (And sadly, you can add to that the ranks of people who commit murder in NJ now.)

So lethal injection might actually be a painful way to die ?

 :cry:::bigcry::::cryer::

Tough luck, don't commit the act of murder and you will not have to endure it. It is supposed to be a punishment after all, why should offenders be offered a nice, peaceful death ?, did they offer their victims a nice peaceful death ?

CNN) -- Two hours before his scheduled execution Thursday, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles commuted the death sentence of Samuel David Crowe, his lawyer said.

Samuel David Crowe's death sentence was changed to life in prison by Georgia authorities, his attorney says.

Crowe was convicted in 1988 of murdering Joseph V. Pala, the retail manager at Wicks Lumber Company in Douglas County. Crowe admitted to the crime.

The board's ruling means Crowe's sentence will be changed to life without the possibility of parole.

Crowe, 47, had been scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 7 p.m. ET Thursday at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, 45 minutes south of Atlanta. Ann Fort, Crowe's lawyer, said she was informed of the clemency in a 4:30 p.m. phone call from the board.

He would have been the 19th inmate in Georgia executed by lethal injection.

William Earl Lynd was executed by lethal injection the first week in May. He was the first inmate to die in the state since September, when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider whether the three-drug combination represented cruel and unusual punishment.

Lynd was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1988.

Don't MissThe U.S. Supreme Court had effectively halted all executions in the country last September, when it agreed to consider whether the three-drug combination used by most states violated the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Death penalty opponents have argued that if inmates are not given enough anesthetic, they could be conscious enough to suffer excruciating pain without being able to express it because of the paralyzer. OH TOUGH TITTIES!!!! :violin::cry:

Their claims are supported by medical studies.

Of the 24 death sentences the Georgia board has considered, Crowe's is the third it has commuted.

Also this week, Mississippi executed murderer Earl Wesley Berry by lethal injection. Berry confessed to abducting Mary Bounds in 1987, beating her to death and then dumping her body in a rural road. The courts rejected Berry's attorneys' arguments that he should be spared because he was mentally retarded.

Well obviously it deters the perp in question by killing them.

I just don't think it deters other potential criminals from committing murderous our violent acts.

Is there any evidence to suggest that states with the death penalty have lower violent/murderous crime statistics ? If not then how is the death penalty any kind of deterrent ?

I don't support the idea of the death penalty because I think its a deterrent, I support it because it exterminates the risk of the most heinous offenders being able to re-offend.

I think you're right, but I think the problem is the implementation.  You don't hear a lot about an execution unless there's some sort of snag (e.g., a court intervenes).   If the executions were more publicized, it might be more of a deterrent.  I'm not saying they should be televised, but it should definitely be national news when someone gets executed.

Thats true.

Generally the only news coverage you get of executions is primarily of anti-death penalty campaigners protesting outside jails or reporters waiting to see if there will be a last minute reprieve or intervention to stop the execution taking place. Either that or the perp in question is considered newsworthy because of their sick "celebrity" status.

I agree that all executions should be considered newsworthy, they should detail the criminal and the crimes they committed and confirm the time of death. Maybe then the whole concept of the death penalty would enter more into the psyche of society in general.
