Wayne was telling me the other day that their saying (their being science) there's ONE TRILLION GALAXIES?  If in fact that's true..................how in the heck can they prove that?  How the heck can they even figure something like that out?  People say "Creation" is hard to believe!  To me, I'm beginning to "QUESTION" some of the statements made by science!  It seems to me, they can say anything they want and no one says PROVE IT!  When you look into our sky, you see our galaxy, so how can you possibly count a trillion different galaxies?  Give me a break!  Am I missing something?  If so, please tell me!

Well maybe while were all thinking bout it Foxy, i had a very curious 8yr old asking who determined the grass was going to be green and the sky was going to be blue and how do we know for a fact that gravity is gravity and no actually something else.....

Heh, the workings of kids minds eh?

I can see your point, has someone actually sat and counted them? Do they have actual PROOF that they all exist?

I don't know the actual number that science says at the current time but often such things are surprisingly easy to compute.  Obviously some interpolation and estimation is at work here but you can just count the number of galaxies in a section of sky and multiply by the ratio of the portion counted to the whole sky.

Many such numbers are known to a surprising degree of accuracy, though obviously this isn't one of them.

It's also been suggested that universes can calve new universes so for all we know there are quintillions of universes each with trillions of galaxies.

Thank you for that explanation cladking.  It helped put the possibility into perspective.  Now, how tho do they know "how much sky" to count the galaxies IN?  Where does the sky end?  Or "space" end?  Where does infinity end?  Can you see my confusion?

Just look up at night and multiply by two (for the southern hemisphere) to see the whole sky.

You're right that we don't really know that the universe we see is the entire universe.  There's also a great deal of matter that isn't accounted for.

Even the most cherished theories in science are constantly being blown out of the water.  There's no reason for anyone to be too sure even of what is, much less what's to be.
