Just got an email from LC with these amazing pictures.  I've always loved the big cats, and ligers are especially interesting to me.  Check out this big ol' beast!!

On a typical day he will devour 200 lb. of meat; usually beef or chicken and is capable of eating 100 lb. at a single sitting.  At just three years old Hercules already weighs half a ton.

He is the unintentional result of two enormous big cats living close together at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in Miami Florida, and already dwarfs both his parents.
"Ligers are not something we planned on having" said institute owner Dr. Bhagavan Antle. "We have lions and tigers living together in large enclosures and at first we had no idea how well one of the lion boys was getting along with a tiger girl; then lo and behold we had a liger."
These two cats don't normally have the opportunity to breed in the wild as most lions live in Africa and most tigers in Asia.

A 50mph runner... Not only that but he likes to swim.  A feat unheard of among water-fearing lions.  In the wild it is virtually impossible for lions and tigers to mate. They are enemies, likely to kill one another. But incredible though he is Hercules is not unique.  Ligers have been bred in captivity deliberately and accidentally since shortly before World War II

Today there are believed to be a handful of ligers around the world and a similar number of tigons; the product of a tiger father and lion mother. Tigons are smaller than ligers and take on more physical characteristics of the tiger.

As the saying goes, You learn something new every day! :)

I've seen "White Tigers", even the one that attacked Roy around 4 years ago. (I was in Vegas at the time.) But never saw a Liger! What a behemoth!!!

My granddaughter saw the movie Napoleon Dynamite, and this image of a Liger was in the movie.  When I showed her these pictures, she was shocked to know they really existed!  She thought it was something that was just made up for the movie!  Great pictures!

I first knew of these almost 30 years ago, working on the movie ROAR.

Tippi Hedren and her then husband Noel Marshall did what amounted to

a home movie about them. I was invited to Shambala, but sadly was not

"allowed" to go by the man I was living with at the time. Tippi's got a new

man now and so do I... and all is well. I often think about calling her up,

I'd love to visit.

You saw that very tiger, Cars?  Montecore himself?  I can't believe those nitwits kept him and still live with him in their compound.

Yes UTR the very one. The incident with Roy occured on a Friday night (I believe) at the Mirage where Zigi & Roy were performing. I was there two days later on Sunday, & saw Montecore out in the indoor/outdoor looking holding tank there at the Mirage. It was said both Zigi & Roy said the incident was "not" Montecore's falut as he thought he was "protecting" - helping Roy. I still have my reservations on that one!

I don't know how two people who claim to understand tigers can say that Montecore was trying to help Roy.  Why then, did the tiger grab Roy by the throat and start to drag him away, just as a tiger will drag its prey???  I don't have any reservations about that notion.  The tiger was going to kill Roy and no one can convince me of any other theory.  These are wild animals, and they are predators.  They are not pets, and you can't train or love their natural instincts out of them.
