The universe is 13.73 billion years old, +/- 3100 years.  This and other interesting observations have been made by WMAP (the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe), run by NASA.  And apparently, the universe is only composed of ~ 4.62% matter.  The rest is dark energy and dark matter.

Oh, and the universe is flat

Edited to add the "billion".   How the did I miss that?!?!

Thanks.

I'm still ruminating about what it means for the universe to be flat.  And what's "above" and "below" that flat plane?

Actually, the Earth is ~ 6 billion years old.

I understand your skepticism on the subject, though.  Scientific knowledge isn't revealed -- it progresses.  We know more today than last year, and we knew last year more than we knew five years ago, etc.  Our knowledge is always imperfect.  It wouldn't surprise me if 10 years from now the +/- 3,100 years turned into +/- 6200 years.
