The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

The power of the grid will become apparent this summer after what scientists at Cern have termed their “red button” day - the switching-on of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the universe. The grid will be activated at the same time to capture the data it generates.

Unbelievable. No... I believe it. I could never have imagined the internet itself in 1978. So why not?

Interesting story.  ::thumbs::

What they're really talking about isn't all that radical.  It just involves replacing the older technology we have installed at most points on the Internet with modern technology like fiber optics.  (This is the stuff that makes Verizon's FiOS so fast.)  It'll be interesting to see what the practical speed limit is on this technology, and what will happen to download times once everyone has access to the technology, rather than just academics.  You've obviously got a speed limit on light, so it'll be interesting to see how long it will take before that actually becomes a hindrance.  ::popcorn::

I have mixed feelings about this...

on one hand...i had heard about a year ago, that something was going to have to be done, because the current internet system was going to crash as more and more 3rd world countries get access...Which is a terrifying thought, as accustomed as we've become to having this incredible tool at our fingertips...what on earth would we do without it now?

and on the other...i just locked into a 2 year contract on Satellite Internet service.  figures.  ::chuckle::

but it will be years before fiber optics reaches me anyway...so i suppose it'll have to do.

I hear ya, Amy!  The nature of technology is that time always marches on.  If it makes you feel any better, if fiber optics really catches on, your satellite company will probably go out of business, and then you'll be released from your contract.  :banana:

true!  :giantgrin:

funny thing though...i had it installed in Feb....called them last week cuz I still haven't received a bill...they had no record of me...but i have service...::scratch::...so they set up another installation appointment last week to get the paperwork through...I just got off the phone with them...still no record.  :doh::dunno:

i have to get this straightened out...i don't want to get a bill down the road for $500 when they finally get it sorted on their end.   :hopeless:
