For some reason, I find this story truly disturbing.  Maybe I'm off-base here, but could this possibly be any more ridiculous?  I can't really see how.  It's bad enough to have to look someone up on Facebook to know who/if they're dating (rather than say, oh, I dunno...asking them), but for the people involved to have to look it up to find out their own status....

:wtf:

How the hell did we ever get to the point where one's relationship status had to be listed and referenced on a website??

Yeah, and me, too. I remember the days when a guy would give a heart with a piece missing from it in the shape of a key. She would wear the heart on a chain around her neck, and he had the key shaped piece on a chain around his neck.

I think a lot of this stuff today is to draw attention to themselves to make them feel special or important. Stupid as hell to me.

I'm not even sure it's about drawing attention to yourself, actually.  I can't imagine you draw that much attention to yourself, on a Facebook page.  To me, it seems like it's about the opposite impulse:  to make your dating as inconspicuous as possible.  If someone has to check your Facebook page to know that you're in a relationship, :wtf: does that say about your relationship in the first place?

What ever happened to communication?  All anyone does today is text message, computer talk, or check out a Facebook??  I like looking into a persons eyes.  I like communicating, talking.  I'm I understanding this right?  God, if I had to look on a computer Facebook to see if my name was there, I'd be ending the relationship really quick..........

I don't know much about facebook, but as far as text message and computer talk, sometimes that's all a person has.

When it's listed on Facebook "it's public knowledge," he said. "Guys won't try to come get with a girl in a relationship and girls won't come to get with a guy. It's like marking your territory."

Now that quote is really disturbing. What? A girl is your "possession?"

This whole article shows a fundamental shift in social communication...and not for the better.

The statement, "it's like marking your territory", makes me think of animals. A bear will reach up and make claw marks as high as they can, and leave a scent. Cats will spray their territory, and a dog pisses on eveything that belongs to them, so, have they become animalistic in their behavior?

Personally, If I was a girl, I'd be offended by that statement.

I think it should be public knowledge just by how they are together, how they treat each other.  If I had to worry about a guy hustling someone else, I wouldn't want him.  It shouldn't make any difference who flirts with you, or who hustles you.  If you're in a relationship, you don't respond.  Simple as that!   Having my picture posted, wouldn't make any difference to me how I behaved.  How I felt about the guy would determine how faithful I was.

I agree with Foxy. The whole "facebook" thing kind of seems tacky.

It's kind of like putting a giant billboard up on the freeway. It takes all the romance and mystery out of the relationship, doesn't it?

The whole thing sounds juvenile and for kids or young adults still acting like they are in high-school (which many do)! Perfect for a MySpace crowd. Sounds to me like Facebook is looking to fight MySpace for some market share.
