That's exactly who Facebook is competing with, Frank:  MySpace.  It's just getting plain ugly...

I used to think of the Internet as opening up communication.  Now, it seems like it's making people socially retarded.  I have to agree with what most people here have said:  If putting your beau's picture on Facebook is your idea of demonstrating your relationship, I'm fairly certain you don't have a relationship.  Why should you have to pre-emptively thwart a rival's advances?  Back in the old days (say, a year ago...) a simple "No thanks.  I'm spoken for." would suffice.

I may regret this...but...

i have a facebook acct. :scared:

and I agree that the noted article is on the strange side...but it's really only telling one example out of millions.

people cannot read what you post unless and until you accept them as a friend.  (although if you type in a name you can see their picture and a couple lines about them -what they allow you to see). You must know their real name to find them and add them.  I was invited by a friend I served on a committee with for years, to keep in touch since we won't see each other on a regular basis anymore (we live 5 hours apart).  I have about 60 friends on there now...about a dozen of them are my age...a few family members...a few classmates...and the rest are in their 20's (my daughters' and their friends who invited me).

I know of one young man who changed his relationship status to married because he was tired of seeing the '1-800-girls... hotline' ads that were generated because of his single status.

In my case, I think these social networking sites are wonderful.  I have 'friends' all over the world, and it's wonderful to keep tabs on what they're up to.  Plus I get to play scrabble with a friend in Indiana.  ::chuckle::  (there are all kinds of gizmos and games you can add to personalize your page).

I agree, as with anything else it can be misused.  But I don't have anyone in my list of friends who is on there for any reason other than to keep in touch with friends and family and network with each other.

Some of my daughters friends just went out to visit them and posted pictures from their trip, including pictures of my girls smiling and laughing and having a great time...I would have missed out on all of that, if not for sites like this.

So, actually for me...sites like this make the world a much smaller place.  ::sgrin::

Actually, I have one, too.  It's not so much the Facebook account idea I have a problem with.  I think it's good for the kind of thing you and your daughters use it for.  ::thumbs::

The part that was disturbing to me was putting your status on Facebook as a way to let the people around you know who you're with.  If you're going out to some bar, the guys/girls there should know who you're with by how you act, not by checking your Facebook page from their iPhone. :)
