Most of us have heard stories about people being suddenly super-human-strong in order to help someone they love.  I just watched a really cool program about a woman who lifted a car off her son, and the scientific explanation of why she could do it.

Her son Anthony was 22 years old and he was a car nut.  He had a 1969 Chevy Impala that he was tinkering on.  He was dealing with some gizmo under the rear wheel (a spring?) and had put the car up on a regular jack, to the jack's full height, which was about 2 feet.  There was a neighborhood kid with him to hand him tools, since Tony thought he'd be ok just pressing himself under the fender and above the rear wheel.

The kid even told him he shouldn't do the work ths way, but Tony thought he'd be fine.  (Typical male "I know what I'm doing" attitude.)  Well, sure enough, the kid was right, and as Tony was wrenching on something difficult under the car, the jack gave way.

A '69 Impala weighs 3500#.  The car came down, trapping him between the top of the tire and the bottom of the fender.  Since he was so far inside the car, the car crushed into his chest, cutting off blood flow to his head, which rendered him unconcious in seconds.  The kid there to help him hauled ass for the house to get Tony's Mom.

When she heard, she hauled ass herself, out to the driveway.  She told the kid to go get help, and was immediately flooded with adrenaline.  When a person gets hit with a rush of adrenaline, they go to fight or flight mode.  Tony's Mom went to fight mode - as would any Mother seeing her child trapped under a car.

The weight she was able to lift was not all 3500# off the ground; it was the 800# rear quarter that was pinning Tony.  That is about 4 times her weight.  But she lifted it anyway.  Tony was unconcious, but his Mom didn't know that and as she's screaming at him and kicking at him trying to get him to move, she gets no response.  She doesn't know if he's dead or alive; all she knows is she can't let the car back down.

Now, science is able to explain some of this feat.

Adrenaline diverts blood away from your skin and less vital organs (whatever those are) and pushes it towards the heart and the muscles in your legs and back.  It can sustain this for a short period.  But it took 5 MINUTES for help to come and Mom held that car off her boy for the entire time.  That is where science can't explain things.  At some point, in that time period, the adrenaline should ebb and force the muscles she is using to shut down.  Mom ignored science and kept at it till help arrived.

Two male neighbors found her and one held the car up while the other pulled Tony out from underneath.  Another neighbor - a woman - saw Tony's Mom shaking violently and put a blanket around her.  Apparently, she wasn't cold, it was the massive amount of adrenaline leaving her body.

Tony spent 2 nights in the hospital and was home in time for Easter dinner.  Fully recovered.

I hope I never have to learn if I have that kind of super-human strength, but it sure is cool to learn about!

I can see some situation's where having the fight/flight reflex would be handy to turn on and off at will. I have heard the same where running was used as an example. Martial Arts come to mind when concentrating on a single effort. And some athletes have even learned how to harness this magic zen and have become the "next" hurtle, in a long line of human achievments.

UTR, head freaks himself out sometimes.

Wonder what kind of superhero dreams Frank has? Wonder Woman, Xena Warrior Princess, Cat Woman?

Oh yeah, MASH is on right now.
