Debated where to put this...here or Britts or even open talk....so feel free to move it if you think it's better suited elsewhere.

Due to the lovely weather here last night...i was forced to watch network television to keep my eye on the storms...

and was pleasantly surprised by a story they did on Nightline...I didn't see the whole thing cuz they kept breaking in with weather updates...but the jist of it is...

there is a study of the effects of music on premature infants.  It was started by a neurologist who while caring for his own infant noticed that there seemed to be a dramatic difference in his child's demeanor when he sang to him/her, while experiencing pain, i.e. colic.  So he started an official study using premature infants as the subjects.  Measuring heart rate and respiration etc. during frequent heel sticks that premies have to endure.

and the preliminary findings are showing that music reduces pain (or the effects of) by 50% or more.  :smitten:

as I said, I missed some of it...but he also commented that infants by 4 months of age, already have preferences of good and bad music.  ::chuckle::

I just thought the whole thing was fascinating and would love to learn more about it.

did anyone else see it that can fill me in on what I missed?

or any thoughts to share?

p.s.

(before the spelling police call me on this ::sstupid::- I have a problem/block with affects/effects...which one should be used above?):dunno:

I wish I'd known about this.  I would have liked to have seen it.  It makes sense, though.  Music has been known to affect people in all kinds of ways.  Maybe there will be something on the web about it that we can read.  I may have to do some hunting.

No worries Amy, I have to think about affect and effect, too.  That one twists me up and makes my alleged brain hurt.

On a personal note here; when my nephew was born, I saw them stick his heel and I damn near came through the window of the nursery at them.  He was by no means a preemie, but I wanted to hurt someone when I saw that.  ::batguy::

If you find anything please share...and I'll do the same.

It makes perfect sense to me too.  I know from personal experience that certain types of music seem to soothe a headache for example.

If this ultimately proves true...i think the ramifications of what it could do to the scientific and medical community and beyond would be mind-boggling.  :heartbeat:

You know how they say 'laughter is the best medicine'...I think music ranks right up there too.

Do you ever notice how sometimes music can transport us to a seemingly higher plane of existence?  (imho)   There are times when listening to certain music i feel lighter, almost like my spirit is soaring.   But I've noticed the opposite is true too...some music seems to bring you down as well...really fascinating to think about.

No worries Amy, I have to think about affect and effect, too.  That one twists me up and makes my alleged brain hurt.

Exactly!  and what's so frustrating is sometimes it's crystal clear and sometimes i draw a total blank.  this is one of the latter.  ::chuckle::

on a side note - do you or anyone else think it would be beneficial to start a thread (perhaps a sticky) in Open Talk or Members on forum nettiquette (spelling and other online annoyances)?  As a reference point.   :littleangel:

:( i know the feeling.  but i do think it's a unique study opportunity in this case...since they are going to be sticking them repeatedly anyway...might as well look at ways to soothe their discomfort.

It could be good, and it could also have a negative effect.  (Affect?)  Remember when we were kids the whack-jobs would call our music "the devil's music" and what-not?  If this does prove true, the people who think crap like that will have a leg to stand on.

Oh hell yes.  Give me some Pink Floyd and I can get lost in my own head for hours.

Oh, I'm sure the PC crowd would try that route. no doubt!   but I don't think it's gonna be quite that simple...different music affects people differently.  So I don't think it's all black and white...we all operate at different frequencies/energy levels...so perhaps it has something to do with matching music frequencies with our own.  Also, our own preferences can change depending on our mood/energy level.   I have no idea...just thinking out loud - (in writing).

I've heard some music that personally I find no redeeming value in at all...so I just don't listen to it.  That's my choice/decision, hopefully it will always be.   It's kind of interesting that they said by 4 months of age, they already have preferences.  I wonder if they're all exposed to the same music and how much of a variety, and how their preferences vary?

::scratch:: another semi-related point...is this the first generation that children and adults actually like some of the same music?  Our girls (20 &25 now) but growing up liked & like alot of the same music we listen to, and vice versa.  My husband took them to see 'Seven Dust' a few years ago.    (I love their music too, but no thanks, I'm getting too old for that scene. :lmao:)  It just seems that perhaps the generation gap in this regard is blurring a little, fairly recently.

Rap.  Or, more accurately - as I call it - Crap.  That is not music, that is noise.  Blech and ptooey.

I wonder if they're all exposed to the same music and how much of a variety, and how their preferences vary?

Tomorrow I'm going to do some hunting and see what I can find for more info on this.  As of now, it is past my "thinking clearly" bedtime.

is this the first generation that children and adults actually like some of the same music?

It very well could be.  I remember before my parents were divorced my sister had some sheet music for Air Supply that she was tinkering with on the piano.  Dad saw that and pitched a fit, asking what kind of "garbage" was this Air Supply stuff.  :lmao:

AIR SUPPLY!!!!   Ooooh....there's some evil music, that.

I have made a huge Floyd fan out of my son, and we both love Creed and Metallica and Linkin Park and many others.  You are probably not far off the mark thinking we are the first generation to bridge that gap.

When I was a teenager, I got Lyme Disease.  It reached the neurological stage, where it was causing pain in my hands.  I had a Walkman stereo that I would roll around with, and listening to it was the only thing that would distract me from the pain.  It definitely had an anesthetic effect.

UTR, Thanks for posting the link!  ::thumbs::

Will post additional thoughts (if i have any) after I have a chance to read it.

Hi Brian,  Lyme Disease?!  :(  ::huggers::

you say music distracted you from the pain...i think that was one thing he mentioned in the report...it may be more than simply a distraction.  Anesthetic effect...interesting observation.

Does all this mean that someday doctors will write prescriptions for music?  :giantgrin:And will music be covered under our prescription insurance plans?  ::rotfl::

::danceb::::music::::danced::::radioguy::

It all makes sense to me.  I have not read the posted article yet, as I wanted to respond first.  But music can and does influence us.  I know I have felt better after listening to music I like.  Why not babies too?

I love music. It helps me when I'm down or don't feel good.
