Ok, Bri.  I don't even know if I have Outlook.  WTF is it and how do I find out if I have it?  If it is something I had to dowload myself, I don't have it.

Now for Firefox, I see you mention Outlook "plays nice" with Word and Windows.  Does Firefox play nice with those?  I use Word every single day.

Tell me some potential drawbacks, please.  When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, so I am still skeptical about Firefox, even though I do trust your knowledge about computer stuff.

Hi, UTR.

Outlook is an e-mail and caledar program.  Its icon looks like this:

Outlook Express (the basic version of Outlook) comes with XP, but the full-featured version of Outlook only comes with Microsoft Office.  I would recommend that you don't use either.

When I said Outlook "plays nice" with Word and Excel, I was being a little facetious.  These programs (and that would include Windows itself) are bound together by a common framework, which is what allows you to do things like write Word macros that control your Outlook e-mail, and Outlook macros that control Word, and Excel charts that are linked to your Contacts list, etc.  It's all very incestuous, which makes it a security nightmare.

As far as the drawbacks to using Firefox, there aren't very many, but there are a few.  If IE isn't set as your default Web browser, some programs that launch your Web browser (e.g., when you click a link in them) may not launch Firefox.  Also, some Web pages are designed for use with Internet Explorer, and because they don't read HTML code the exact same way, pages might look different in Firefox than they do in IE.  In the early days of Firefox, when most code was still IE-specific, this was more of a problem.  Nowadays, pages may look slightly different, but they'll generally function the same.  Where you'll run into a problem is any page that relies on ActiveX, which is a technology that is exclusively used in IE.  ActiveX won't work in Firefox at all.  That's why I recommend an extension called IE Tab.  This will allow you to view IE-designed pages within Firefox, so that you can use Firefox 99% of the time, but still run IE within Firefox, when you need to.

One other benefit over IE:  Firefox has the ability to spell-check forms.  That should please those of you who are fastidious in their posting.  ::sgrin::

I agree with you that Vista is basically an upgrade to XP.  I don't dislike Vista, but it certainly is a lot less than Microsoft promised it would be.

Brian,

I currently use FireFox and like it. Could you please tell me any positives or negatives that would occur if I upgraded to the new version?

Hi, JBF.

Upgrading to the new version is almost entirely positive, at this point.  You get a raft of new features (see my earlier posts on it), and better security.  The only downside is that some of your extensions won't necessarily work.  (Creators have to upgrade their extensions for the new version.)  Even this is easily handled, though.  There's an extension called MR Tech Toolkit that gives you the option of ignoring the "maxversion" parameter of extensions (which is usually the thing that keeps older extensions from working with newer versions of Firefox).

I can explain (in general) why you're having problems with Outlook.  It really comes down to three things:

2)  Bill Gates is the Antichrist.

And of course, you CAN skip Windows altogether and just run Linux.

I run CentOS 5 on all my machines at home. my latop(s) and desktop(s) are all CentOS 5.
Actually, the phone system is Centos 4.4, but that's Trixbox for you.

Virus? What's a virus?

I have no idea what spyware is any more either.

I've forgotten how to run antivirus software, except when I have to fix a friend's broken Winders PC.

I could run ClamAV, and so on -- but I don't see the need, since I'm behind a Squid proxy server that I do run ClamAV on and so forth.

The Penguin ROCKS... and so does KDE, OpenOffice, Firefox, Squirrelmail, Usermin, and Asterisk/Trixbox.

Oh, and mplayer, Adobe Reader, Java 1.5, Skype, and much else all works too.

Install a program?  Google "Centos 5 yum install <programname>"
Someone just replies "yum install whatever" and I cut and paste and go on with life.

I agree with a lot of what you say here, but I think, for a lot of people, running Linux to avoid viruses is like launching a SCUD missile at your neighbor because he plays his music too loud.  It's just overkill, unless you genuinely like technology and getting code under your fingernails.

To give you a little example:  I'm in Linux right now, and a little while ago I wanted to install the Amazon MP3 Downloader (which they supposedly have packaged for OpenSuSE now).  Problem is, it's not built for a 64-bit architecture.  And because it's Amazon, they don't actually supply you with the source to compile.  After a lot of Googling, and some false starts with things that looked like they were going to work, I've narrowed my choices down to running WINE or booting into Vista when I want to use the downloader.

Now, for the most part, 99.99% of people's daily tasks can be handled in Linux, but about 5% of it won't be as intuitive to them (because they're used to double-clicking for everything), and another 1% of things a lot of people use still are proprietary (e.g., good luck if you're trying to listen to all that DRM'd music you downloaded before you found out about Amazon).

I'm using Linux to type this post right now, so I do think it's right for some people.  but it's not quite there as an everyman desktop yet.  With things like the EePC catching on, though, it might only take another year or so to break through.
