I didn't realize this.  I assumed the touch of a nail worked.

Most people either love or hate the iPhone's touch screen, and based on a report on the LA Times, women with long fingernails are among the haters. Why? Well, since the iPhone's touchscreen only responds to electrical charges emitted by your bare fingertips, women with long nails are left out in the cold. A woman interviewed for the article went so far as to suggest Apple was being misogynistic because it did not include a stylus for women and didn't consider womens' fingers and nails when designing the phone.

Hi, Frank.

This has actually been somewhat a point of controversy since the iPhone's introduction -- especially on the Palm message board I'm on.  When Jobs introduced the iPhone, one of the benefits he touted was not "needing" a stylus.  But that's a double-edged sword.  It means you don't have one more thing you can lose with the iPhone, and (I think...) it means that random objects touching your iPhone's screen won't activate functions, but it also means you can't do things that would require more dexterity than you can muster with a fingertip (e.g., drawing, writing characters, etc.).  It's one of those design decisions that on the one hand, was really brave, but on the other, IMO, was really, really stupid.

One of the things that's been talked about for a while now is the extent to which (especially with the new SDK out) the iPhone and iPod Touch will morph into a PDA-style device.  The lack of a stylus-enabled touchscreen is, I think, one of the things holding the iPhone back from that.  It's very difficult for me to imagine the kind of input you need for a PDA to be iPhone-friendly.

Anyway, I think the women should sue.   That would force Apple to take the next step forward with the device.

My son's video game system is able to us these little skinny "pens" that are really just giant toothpicks in a way. They are very cheap and easy to replace or have backups for, so I would imagine requiring that type of tool (literally a tooth pick would work) would enable convenience and the whole range of functions. This "pen" is stored within the device easily and neatly out of the way.

Yep.  That's the kind of stylus pen that Palms have had since 1996.  (Unfortunately, Palm styli have gotten cheaper and increasingly more flimsy as time's gone on.)  Jobs apparently doesn't like the stylus interface idea.  I can kind of understand why.  The multitouch screen of the iPhone/iPod Touch is really an advance, in a certain respect.  Unfortunately, this also makes the iPhone/iPod Touch more about displaying information, rather than actually manipulating it.
