My wife's computer has 2-256 RAM card things in it.

It's running slow. She defrags and everything regularly.

She has 40gb of storage. (1/3 left). She has a lot of things

called "tubes" for her graphic  stuff she does.

Any suggestions how much more RAM she should get?

Can she get just one more 512 or 1GB RAM with an existing

256 or do they have to be equal? ........Thanks

It varies with the manufacturer. That said, I find it is usually easier to remove the old RAM and just throw in a couple 512 ot 1G sticks. RAM is pretty cheap. I would think 1G would be good, your description is classic thrashing (paging in and out) and a real performance killer.

Going from 512MB to 1GB of RAM can seriously improve the performance.  Do you know what kind of RAM it takes?

i think my computer needs more memory too because, like your wife, i also have folders upon folders of tubes saved on my hardrive, which is only a 40 gb also

Honest reply...if it has that small of RAM and that small of a HDD (you didn't say how fast it was), I would just get a new PC.

I see eMachines/HP have some for ~$300 after rebates and better ones for $500 after rebates.

1GB of ram will run you ~$80+.  Just get a new PC.

Look at the motherboard specs FIRST before you buy memory.  All motherboards have a limit of how much memopry can be shoved into it.  It may be cheaper (in the long run) to buy a new computer that is more compatible with the current hardware & software.

Make sure you are not running McAfee and Norton at the same time. Some manufactures install both, and it can/will slow performance.

Windows uses 150 - 200 MB of ram you then need more ram on top for your software to run in. Ram dos'nt make things faster unless you add faster ram. If your windows and software need more ram than you have the hard drive is used as ram so your computer slows to the speed of the hard drive. before you upgrade you need to add the same type of ram theirs the old 133Mhz  DDR and now DDR2 ram  DDR also comes at different speeds so you need matching ram types and matching speeds.

Windows XP and office or media software     512MB Ram minimum

Windows XP and modern games      1GB minimum some need 1- 2 GB
