Do you have 2 drives?

Is the drive you want erased your primary or secondary drive?

Is it a spare one just laying around?

If it is the only drive you have, do you have a copy of Wondpws 2000 or XPthat you can boot from?

Depending on where it's at will depend on the best way to reformat it.

Simple.  A large magnetic field.  An commercial electromagnet will work.

Short of sending it to me, I would install into an existing computer.    I would replace any devices on the 2nd IDE cable with the hard drive (i.e. remove the IDE cable and power cable and repladce that deivce with your HD).  Make sure it is pinned as Master or Cable select.  If it is already formatted, it will show up.  It will be on your My Computer folder.  Just right click it and hit Format.  If it does not show and pinned correctly, look in the Disk Management MMC.  If it is there, you can format it from there.  IF it is not visable int he Disk Management MMC, you screwed something up.

Go here and download Boot Nuke...

http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/dban/dban-1.0.7_i386.exe

After you download it.. the program will walk you through creating a floppy disk with Boot-nuke on it.. After you create the floppy,  restart your computer booting from the floppy drive... It will give you several chances to change your mind before you erase the hard drive..  All data will be wiped clean and there will be no recovering it...

I want to erase it. Not format it. I don't want the FBI getting ahold of it!!

Is it inside a computer right now?

If it is, I would try this Boot Nuke disk thingy.  This sounds like a secure wipe that writes vaious patterns to the disk therfore erasing any data on the drive.

If it is just laying around, I'd install in a working computer, run the Command line and run the Fdisk conmmand.  Make damn sure that youy enter the right drive letter.  It still boils down to where the drive is installed at.

I would NOT run that Nuke disk if you are installing this drive as a second drive in your computer.  You could accidently Nuke your main hard drive.
