Probably a dumb question, but thought I would ask. I have a couple of versions(XP Home & XP Pro) with key codes that I had on computers that crashed. Can someone else *legally* install the software and use it or does Microsoft have something coded in to prevent it? I have a Dell 'puter with it's own XP version, so I have absolutely no use for it.

A friend of mine had a hard time installing windows XP and it remaining stable on his PC for more than a month or so.  After the third time trying to install it prompted him to call Microsoft for a new key code.  As long as the person has the original disk and certificate I believe they can use your spare licenses.

yup-

As long as Msoft does not get that license key as being installed on another PC, they're fine with it...

Thanks for the reply Aquila Storm Bird. And thanks for the welcome in my original *Hello* thread. :)

I hit e-bay about a month ago to see what full versions(not upgrade) of XP were going for and saw that no one was bidding on(or was not willing to pay much) for XP versions that have been used. I figured there had to be a reason.... thus, the question. It's amazing the junk computer stuff I've kept over the years and if someone can use those versions I will probably give them to them. The pride & joy I have is the NEC Ready 9522 Pentium 100 that still works.... if you have the time for it to boot up. To think what we blew for computers 10 years ago(& internet access) is stupid and probably the reason I never buy the latest technologies these days until they have been out for a year or two and the prices have come down to reality.

MSFT slashed the XP MSRP's in half recently because of the impending release (prolly in February) of Windows Vista.  The MSRP on Home is now $50 and Pro is now $100, I believe.  For the upgrades anyway.  I don't know the full version prices off the top of my head.

Robert,

Thanks for your Microsoft legality part you posted. I figured there had to be a reason why many would not want to buy a used version of XP and the lockdown of only one use of the software at once on the internet would probably convince many to not take the chance. And I guess that's the reason why many will only sell some software with an obsolete stick of ram to make sure *hardware* is with the sale to make it somewhat legal.

robertpr,

the eula you are quoting is from an operating system that came bundled with the computer it was on.  If that were the overall eula for all windows OSs microsoft would not be able to sell their OS off the shelf without providing hardware.

I have many different versions of Microsofts OSs.  The eula is different for each one.  The eula for an off the shelf version specifically gives you the right to transfer the license to another machine as long as the OS is removed from the previous machine.

If you look at the OS cd that came bundled with the PC you will notice it is not the hologram type cd like off the shelf versions.

I don't see how exactly selling a piece of hardware with the OS on ebay going to keep it legal.  There is no easy way to tell it came with the original machine

XP, no matter how purchased must be activated electronically via the internet.  the ultimate and final test to see if you are going to be able to use it if you are not sure.

bgrice, are the xp copies from bundled machines or off the shelf?  I believe, for example, if it is a bundled OS from a Dell notebook it may not even install on a toshiba or hp notebook and give you the error that it is the wrong machine.

SO, I guess my answer is further defined as...if it is an off the shelf OS you can transfer it as long as it no longer exists on the original machine.  If it was a bundled OS with a PC or notebook.  It may not or most likely will not even install.

i hav'nt read all the posts. The thing to wotch out for is computer manufacturers have Windows XP installed and provide a XP disk that will only work on the motherboard of the computer it was sold with. OEM versions of windows are good alot cheaper but retailers have to sell it bundled with hardware they will work on any PC you buy or build as long as it's installed on one computer at a time.
