I am looking over the PC magazine reviews of Wireless N routers.

I was wondering if anyone here has any input or experience with the latest Wireless N routers available.

I'm looking at D-Link, Belkin, SMC, etc......

So.... humor me. What's the advantages of a *N* router over a *G* router? I just added my older Dell laptop into my broadband loop with a Netgear 108Mbps router & PC card and really have no complaints.... so far.

The N claims 4X the range of a G (that's why I want it).  Plus some like the Linksys WRT300N claim 12X faster than G for bandwidth intense multimedia.

If you go to N or 802.11n you need all the access points and nics on the network to be 802.11n capable.  That could be a problem for older equipment.

It also modulates at 2.4GHz so do not set one up next to a 2.4GHz phone.  They interfere with each other.

to correct when I commented about all points and nics being n capable.  It's a speed issue not a compatibility issue.

FROM LINKSYS

With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band.
To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

Linksys....

Some people have problems --- but that's outdated news now-- the newer firmware fixes that, and correct configuration does as well.

90% of the problems I ever heard of were either outdated code or ISP misconfiguration of the device.

Well...I am wireless now.  I installed the Linksys WRT300N.  It was fairly easy to install and setup.  The setup software was really easy to follow.  The step by step hardware  installation instructions were integrated with the setup process.  I am comfortable with the security also.  The encryption key can be 8-63 characters or 64 hexadecimal values long.  WOW! that plus WEP, PSK2, and MAC address filtering,  being able to not broadcast SSID.  I feel secure from most War riders.

I see no apparent difference in speed.  I have had problem free wireless for days now!

You probably wouldn't see a speed difference as the limiting factor is your internet connection itself, the router will far outperform that.

I feel secure from most War riders.

The low fruit pickers will move on, if someone wants you for a specific reason it will slow them down a bit.:D
