I have to say that it's worth looking into in my short time of 3 months that I have had service with Sun Rocket. The reasoning behind it was simple.... I was tired of paying $45/mo for a landline that I couldn't even make a call in the Houston area without possibly having it be long distance due to the multiple area codes. And to add that feature it would have cost more. I can now call anywhere in the U.S.(and I think some foreign countries) any time of the day or night and it costs $16/mo which includes all of those stupid federal/local/surcharge taxes that are imposed on your normal phone line. And too boot they included two wireless phones and just about every feature(caller ID, voice mail, etc) that the landline companies offer. Heck... I can even go up on Sun Rocket's site and log into my account and see what turds are ignoring my *Don't Call* request and just add them to the block list. That list is getting long as the non-profit groups are getting added on also.

It was a gamble dropping my landline in favor of a broadband VOIP type one and I had to sign the 1 year contract to get the best deal(& phones), but in my mind it was worth the try to unload excess costs. So far I say it is well worth it. The only problem with the service that I can see is that it is solely dependent on your broadband connection. You lose your connection(Roadrunner here) and so goes your phone connection. There are no delays that I can see of in conversations and the voice quality is equal to regular service, but I have lost connection 3 times in the 3 months since I have switched over. Kind of like an upgraded cell phone you might say.

So.... anyone else going VOIP? If so.... what say?

I just hooked my uncle up with vonage internet phone and it seems to work great and was only $25 flat per month for all domestic calls and cheap international.

We have a large Cisco VoIP infrastructure at work, people tend to forget it is IP based and prone to the same problems. I can kill a VoIP connection by starting a flood on the network, or if you just want to torment then, just enough traffic to make it start breaking up. Basically a solution in search of a problem.

Vonage works pretty well...

I've had it for about a year now--

Asterisk is also fun to use---

I have two Cisco servers at school, and about 500 phones on an 11-campus network.

I've been using Asterisk at home for about a year now--- its' really starting to come out of beta... what's wild is that I have it running on my WRT-54G Linksys wireless AP --

as well as a standalone server..
