I'm finally fed up with the shotty service from Comcast cable and I'm gonna ditch them in favor of DSL. On paper Comcast is faster, but here lately, we've had so much damn down time it's rediculus. At this point, I'm just looking for a reliable connection. Had a period of over a month back in July where the connection was offline more than it was on, and I live in a fairly big city. Well, no more of this crap. I sniped a nice DSL modem for cheap on ebay tonight and as soon as it comes in I'm ready to switch. Just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with them first. Heck, this stupid connection dropped twice while typing this message.

Oh yea, I'm in middle Tennessee. :)

You didn't use your police issue weapon for that, did you? I'm not so sure the department would approve of that. ::nono::

;)

I'm glad to hear that Comcast is so loved & so inspirational. I've had Roadrunner the last 6 years or so and TimeWarner traded us in the Houston area off to Comcast just recently for another market of theirs. Supposedly going to happen early next year and Roadrunner e-mail bites the dust sometime after that. I will probably be changing also when that happens. If wireless laptop(Verizon, Sprint, etc) were a viable fast internet alternative and a bit cheaper, I'd be headed that way.

Good luck with getting that to work with BellCrap if it ain't their model to begin with...

I've had a number of friends try Westells from other than Bell, and something Bell does requires -their- firmware to be in it--- not the stock Westell stuff..

I've had excellent luck with the Cisco 827/837 DSL routers before...

those things rule...

Well, what I did was I printed out BellSouth modem compatibility list and searched on ebay. I ended up sniping this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150047231018&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=005. We'll see what happens. I like that it has a built in 802.11 router and access point and firewall. I may persue getting a wireless enabled laptop.

That might work ---

Keep me posted--- I'd be interested to see.

Don't allow your computer to get a public IP address -- it's not safe

That would happen if it was running in bridge mode-- which as a router, it's PROBABLY not -- but SBC was bad to run them that way anyhow..

Same with Bell and the Westells --- it took BellCrap years to get to where they were willing to enable router mode...

One other thing--

Be aware that not all DSL modems run on the 'red/green' pair of wires-

Some run on the 'yellow/black' pair---

The solution is fairly easy to fix--- just crosswire two jacks together---

red on one jack to yellow on the other, and green on one jack to black on the other.

Then you just use two regular phone cables- one from the DSL modem to jack#1 --- then from jack#2 to the walljack where DSL comes from.

If you're not familiar with the 'line filters' that are required for DSL, they're easy too-

A lot of folks filter ALL the phone lines in their house at one time, right from the demarc - then they take just ONE line and run _directly_ from Bell to where-ever the DSL modem is...  That means you can use just one filter...

Sometimes that's not possible, if you don't have all the wiring available (if it's in an outdoor box with no room inside)...

Ok, I'm pretty computer literate, I've built/upgraded/fixed my system many times, but I'll be the first to admit I'm DSL stupid. So some of what you said buzzed right out of radar. I went from dial up to cable four or five years back and that's where I've been. Here's my setup so far (modem won't be here till friday). I have just one phone jack and no access to the outside box (I live in a small apartment). I'm not going to hook a phone up to the line, just the internet, I use a cell phone only. I'm somewhat familiar with the filters cause I have a buddy with DSL in another town from another company. My modem comes with a few of them. It was my understanding that you put the filter on the jack, plug the phone line to the filter and the other end to the modem and ethernet from the modem to the NIC through standard cat5. Right? Also, if it makes any difference, I picked up one of these ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200030952219&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=010 ) cause I didn't have a phone line long enough and I doubt the one that comes with the modem will be either. Not sure if the fancy cable will make any difference, but I figure it can't hurt. I'm not sure about the whole public IP deal. I know BellSouth allows for static IP's. BTW, thanks for the info. :)

;) It is true smitty if it ain't there modem it will be a pain in the ass to do wireless on. Cisco is the best for sure and will probably do fine.

I gave up and went to there network router a brand I never even heard of 2-Wire. It's what they wanted me to use and until I gave in I had nothing be problems all the time.

Now I have a 2-Wire Gateway and not one problem since I plugged it. I have 1 desktop and 2 to 3 laptops on it daily.

In fact out here if you don't use there routers your on your own when it comes to support... they just tell you see ya..!!

I've had excellent luck with the Cisco 827/837 DSL routers before...

Thanks Carla, that's good to know. The brand of modem I picked up is a 2 Wire HomePortal 1000SW. Is this the one you have? It's a used modem but not sure what service it was used for. I know this modem is on their compatability list so here's hoping. :)
