Basically my desk top has all the good stuff on it.  I have a wireless router hooked up and my laptop has connection through that.

I was wondering if there is a way I can access the files and the External Hard Drive on the desk top.

:)

Get a small hub or switch and a couple network cables, setup IP. Share out the drives and away you go.

You familiar with IP addresses and how to configure your router?

If so, I can help ---

Ummmm, wireless, I dont the computer tied down to a cable.  I would like to access the music from my hard drive on the desktop from the laptop that is in the kitchen or on the back porch.

Is there a way I can link to the network through the wireless router?

Yes.

Both computers need to be in the same Workgroup --

That's set in the My Computer >> Computer Name properties box.

Once they're on the same workgroup, and you've ' shared ' the directory with the music, you should be able to access it.

Gettin from there to here might be a little harder, depending upon how familiar you are with knowing the ip address of each computer, etc...

It's very possible for the desktop PC to be connected via a physical ethernet cable to the router, and the laptop be wireless --- it's the workgroup/IP subnet that must match, not the physical connectors.

And don't forget to restrict access to only computers on your LAN - wireless gets hotwired quite easily by freeloaders. ;)

I made sure the Wireless was password protected when I set it up.  I believe the network is already on a home group... I'll have to check that out.  As for IP addresses, I believe they are DHCP... thats going to be a problem isn't it?

One word....

kismet.

OK.. another word.. or phrase...

"Cain and Abel"

You don't want me capturing your packets with THAT on..

I'll be spoofing your MAC address shortly....

Hide your SSID from being broadcast...

then I have to have an RF meter to know there's an AP even there...

good!

If both computers are in the same workgroup, they just have to know each other's name.. or IP...

\192.168.15.24\music should access the 'other' computer with that IP address and sharename of 'music' set up -- obviously, you'd have right-clicked on the My Music folder and chosen "share" and put in a username/password.

Make sure both computers have your same username on them- WITH a password.

filesharing WILL NOT connect in XP SP1 or above without a password on the account-

You MUST enter a password when turning on your computer--- if it goes straight to the desktop, that probably means no password set, and it'll bomb...

You CAN edit

c:\windows\drivers\etc\hosts  (don't add a .txt to this-- save as NO extension, or rename to no extension after Notepad gets done with it)

192.168.15.204          mydesktop

192.168.15.205          mylaptop

Obviously, you'd have to keep that up to date.. but then your sharenames could be

\mydesktop\music.

That would make 'mapped network drive' connections work -- even with the /persistent switch on them.

"net use k: \mydesktop\music /persistent"

You'd then have a K: drive on your laptop all the time--- If your username/password matched on both machines, it SHOULD never prompt for a user/pass....

I'm so used to working with Win2k3 domain controllers, or Linux SMBDCS controllers that I'm not up to speed on just two computers as much...

One good thing would be if your router supports DHCP reservations, you could just put the MAC address of each workstation in with a reservation for .204 and .205 respectively..

That way, they'd get that IP every time...but still get dynamic DNS servers (if your ISP changed them, it'd still work)

Going even MORE geeky, consider a Linksys NLSU2 with the Linux opensource firmware on it, and put your music on that --- it's a full on Samba server capable of being a DC for a small network..

I think it's even got a Radius server that could auth your wireless connections

(actually, the DD-WRT project firmware for LinkSys WRT54G and other routers DOES have a FreeRadius server ... specifically for using WPA and TKIP 802.1x authentication of wireless clients... ON the linksys...)

I run DD=wrt just so I have a firmware DNS and DHCP server going--- and Asterisk VOIP on the same wireless router... my wireless SIP phone talks to Vonage that way...
