The origin of the human brain has been traced back to primitive central nervous systems in worms and bugs, researchers now say.

Humans and other vertebrates evolved from an ancient common ancestor that also gave rise to insects and worms, scientists have long known. But they're of course quite different today.

Vertebrates have a spinal cord running along their backs, but insects and annelid worms such as earthworms, which have simple organs that barely resemble a brain, have clusters of nerves organized in a chain along their bellies. So biologists have long assumed these systems—key to ultimately putting a brain to use—arose independently, only after the split.

In the new study, researchers at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] in Heidelberg examined they embryos of a marine annelid worm called Platynereis dumerilii, which has a nervous system unchanged for eons. They documented the molecular fingerprints of the developing nerve cells.

"Our findings were overwhelming," says study team member Alexandru Denes. "The molecular anatomy of the developing CNS [central nervous system] turned out to be virtually the same in vertebrates and Platynereis. Corresponding regions give rise to neuron types with similar molecular fingerprints and these neurons also go on to form the same neural structures in annelid worm and vertebrates."

"Such a complex arrangement could not have been invented twice throughout evolution , it must be the same system," said Gáspár Jékely, another team member. "It looks like Platynereis and vertebrates have inherited the organization of their CNS from their remote common ancestors."

The results, published this month in the journal Cell, leave a nagging question: How did the central nervous systems get flipped from belly to backside or vice-versa?

"How the inversion occurred and how other invertebrates have modified the ancestral CNS throughout evolution are the next exciting questions for evolutionary biologists," said study leader Detlev Arendt.

The split refers to our becoming vetrebrates I assume?

I've seen theores before the CNS in human embryo's resembles that of very primitve creatures-but here is some proof which is great!

I saw something a while back that suggests an independent organism might play a role in the operation of the human brain. Specifically these are spirochetes but I may have misunderstood the point.

There is a wide array of human specific life forms that seem to be emerging.

I thought the caused disease?? Interesting theory! I guess that would be a symbiotic relationship like with bacteria in the gut??

God told us it was a circle already Frank... Long before science...::chuckle:: :rotfl:

Job 22:14 Thick clouds cover Him, so that He cannot see, And He walks above the circle of heaven.'
Prov 8:27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
Isa 40:22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Circle is also translated as sphere in Hebrew.

That was one of the arguments used by men of science, as well as their evidence of it not being flat.

They were still burned at the stake by Rome. That's history. Many books actually quote the statements made by the Archbishops and bishops, and even a few letters from the Popes about why these men of science were wrong.

Google it for yourself.

But I agree-- the Bible DID say otherwise--- but the Church in it's pride would not even admit that their own Bible proved the men of science right.

Maybe I should save this for another thread but it's interesting that Job is being quoted here.

When this was written the pyramids were ancient. Indeed when any of the bible was written the pyramids were ancient. I'm hardly a bible scholar but I've been reading this work a great deal recently as well as searching it on-
line.

I'm coming to believe that it is not what I've always taken it to be. I'm coming to suspect that many of these stories are what's left after the 2,000 years of the written language corrupted the old oral traditions. Before writing all knowledge had to be passed down from generation to generation orally and these were divided among the various fields of knowledge.

Almost immediately upon the invention of writing these started to break down as fewer people saw a need to continue and it became easier to compare the different versions. Over the next couple thousand years these became corruted and many were lost. Those who wrote the bible may have simply gathered up everything with a religious bent and compiled them into the old testament.

This might explain the lack of references to the pyramids and the pyramid builders; Genesis is the little that remained of the "origins" tradition and Job is the testament of the pyramid builders. ...Specifically the first few hundred words of the creator.

Genesis is especially interesting if the material which appears to be hyperbole is omitted.

Spirochetes are responsible for some human diseases but they all, apparently, have a peculiar way of being able to hide in the human body. They hide from the immune system and are extremely difficult to grow outside the host.

It's been said that if a human were to vanish, he'd still be visible briefly because of all the foreign life forms left behind. Many of these are the vast numbers of spirochetes which "infect" us.
