Does anyone have experience using Dutch Ovens? My husband has recently started collecting a variety of them...all shapes and sizes. We've used them to make a pork roast with all the trimmings, and a chicken dinnner as well as a variety of other dishes. Just put all the ingredients in, and put coals underneath and on top of the lid and let it go. How many coals you use depends on the size of the oven. My sister uses hers to make breakfast burritos. I've made chili over the campfire with one. Good stuff!

It's been a while but yeah, I have. The really good heavy duty cast iron ones. You can make pretty good biscuits in them, too, if you're careful. They can stick if you don't have it seasoned right or use some type of grease. HA camp cooks in the olden days used to just slap some bacon grease in there, right?

I inherited my Mother in law's Dutch Oven. It is my most prized possesion of hers. I haven't tried in over the coals, but use it often on top of the stove and in the oven. It makes the BEST roasts I've ever tasted. Beef or Pork, they are amazing. They get the most wonderful flavor. Hams too!

Hi Greeneyes yes, they are amazing! not all Dutch ovens are designed for use with coals....does yours have legs? we have 2 with legs about an inch long, and 2 without. The ones without legs work well over the campfire though, we bought a tripod to sit over the fire, that it can hang on. My husband also made a heavy duty contraption to hold the heavier ones too. Looking forward to trying it out soon.

No, mine sits flat. I'd LOVE to have one with legs. You will have to share some of your best recipes with me

These posts are bringing back memories of my mother using her heavy duty cast iron Dutch oven to make the best beef pot roast I've ever tasted in my life. So tender and delicious. She put in veggies and the right amount of water. I guess most everyone thinks their own mother was/is the world's best cook.

My Grandmother and my mom used Dutch Ovens. The meals that came out of those old cast iron pots were the best! I've never been able to really keep mine from rusting! No matter how much I seasoned my pot, nor how much I dried it after washing, it still seemed to rust!I think their replacement today is suppose to be the "Slow Cooker or Crock Pot" In my opinion they don't even come close.....................

I also just learned something from that link i posted earlier....not supposed to put the lid on tight...it needs to have air circulating through it. need to go home and fix that tonight.

Well I never used soap because I was told it would ruin the seasoning of the pot. I did however put the lid on! Maybe I'll try again!
