Since LC brought it up in the garden thread, thought I would give this thread a bump.

Growing herbs in a window sill is a great way to get them fresh, the store-bought ones can sometimes be up to 5 yrs old. watch the paprika as I have found white worms  about 1/8" long in some freshly bought from the store. take them out of the original containers and put them in your own carousel. Much like checking beans for stones. I was at the University green-house today and they were selling rosemary thyme sage basil and oregano seedlings and look fairly easy to grow (I have never grown them myself) I would like to try it someday.

Sounds great, LC.  Do you have alot of yard for a garden?  Are you planning an outdoor garden for the herbs, or indoor?

outdoors, the yard is quite large, and the rhododendrens are about 40 feet high and blooming! :)  also very tall and full christmas-type of trees. the whole area has great greenery, well-established.

mine are this color, and as tall as the house! the neighbor's kids had their pics taken in front of them on prom night. first good rainstorm and all the blossoms fall off. :(

what i really like is the evergreens, they will look spectacular with Christmas lights on them. but i'll need a fire truck ladder! :bigwink:

indeed Foxy, i hope i never see another palm tree again! and cannot wait for Fall!

Marie, i know it's not herbs, but i just found this in the Boston Globe:

A no-trouble choice for blooming color

Those beautiful bursts of color you're seeing in yards across the region can only mean one thing: It's the peak of the rhododendron season. We checked in with members of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Rhododendron Society on several of the most frequently asked "rhodie" questions. Here's what we learned. - CAROL STOCKER

When do rhododendrons bloom? The peak is Memorial Day weekend but there are so many different types that the rhododendron season begins in April with Rhododendron mucronulatum and doesn't end until mid-summer.

What's the difference between azaleas and rhododendrons? Think of azaleas as smaller rhododendrons that are not evergreen and that need more sun. All azaleas are members of the rhododendron genus but not all rhododendrons are azaleas.

Why are rhododendrons so popular? They are low-maintenance, shade-tolerant shrubs that come in almost every size and color.

What is the fastest-growing evergreen variety for screening? R. maximum will grow up to a foot in height and width per year in shade to 12 feet tall.

What if my rhododendron has gotten too big? Can I prune it? It is better to move rhododendrons, which are shallow rooted, than to prune them. However, if you have inherited giant old ones and cut the trunk to a foot, most will resprout as nice small shrubs in five years.

Are all rhododendrons shade tolerant? The larger the leaves, the more shade they need. Small-leaved types like more sun.

How big will my rhodie get? Many types stay small, especially those that are not evergreen. The distance between the leaf whorls on the stem will indicate how much it will grow each year. (The greater distance between them means the plant grows more quickly. If the stem between the whorls is a foot long, then it's growing a foot a year.)

When should I plant rhodies? If they are in pots you can plant them anytime, but if you are moving shrubs growing in soil, do it the same months you seed a lawn - April, May, September, or October.

How do I plant a new rhodie? Pick a spot in partial shade that does not get soggy soil, salt from winter road crews, or sizzling afternoon sun. Dig a hole just deep enough that the top of the rhododendron rootball is even with the surrounding soil surface. Mix the soil from the hole with compost, fill it in, and use the extra soil to build a dam around the trunk so water will stay put when you irrigate. Don't fertilize and don't plant it too deep.

How do I care for a rhododendron? Rhodies are great low-maintenance plants that just want to be left alone. They don't like to be pruned or fertilized and don't need watering except for weekly watering the first year after they are planted.

went out a while ago to inspect how my garden grows, i have LOTS of green tomatoes, different varieties. deer ate all the cucumbers. i can't be mad at the pretty deer ::nsmile::.  strawberries have gone by. but WOW! my herbs are huge! :banana:the basil and sage are going to need to be dried, i'll never use it all. the rosemary is doing nicely. that will dry well too. and i have 3 peppers! ::chuckle::

the asparagus is gone, but it has frilly fronds that are about 6' tall, i will leave them there until they re-seed themselves for next season.

now i'm wishing i had bought more peppers and string beans, don't have much to speak of.

i'm just waiting for the local sweet corn stands to pop up, august is the month!
