i always had an herb garden when i lived in cooler climes, but have not been able to do it down here in this extreme heat. i grew everything from basil to sage to rosemary. it was great to step outside and snip fresh herbs for whatever was cooking. they generally like it cool and not to have 'wet feet'. anyone here grow herbs?

Right now I have pineapple sage... LOTS (hummers and butterflies love

it) and use a little for grilling...

Also, something very nice called Lemon Balm, use it as a tea for sedative

purposes...

 

(Did I just say that to a COP?)

hey, you're not smoking it right? ::potsmoker:: :D.........actually there are many medicinal uses for some herbs. my grandma grew camomille  for stomach upsets. ........edited to add a tip...be careful where you plant mint, the stuff will take over EVERYTHING!

I've had my spearmint with me so long I forgot to even say it! (30+ years!)

 You're right,

it's a vigorous grower, but any time I feel it's getting out of bounds, I just

yank a bunch out.

I wish I had more room to grow different things, but I guess I'll just have

to be content with what I have.

I love herb gardens!  Use to have a big one about 15'X30'!  Planted Mint and Oregano in big pots in the garden, and camomille for tea, chives, sage, lavender, edible rose, edible pansy, rosemary,thyme and lemon balm.......I can't think of any others at the moment.  It was fun using all of it!  The edible flowers are great when you put the petals in a green salad...........

here's a great lobster dish made with dill....dill is a weed, and grows like one. i knew some Swedes who introduced me to this. they simmered a fresh maine lobster in water with huge bunches of dill weed. then, chill the lobster in the fridge overnight with the cooking water and dill. it imparts the most delicious flavor to a cold lobster! i can't believe how well they complimented each other. an elegant lunch! ::eats::

My mother used to grow dill and parsley every year when she had her own home.  She also had the most beautiful rose bushes!!  I haven't planted any herbs in years, but this post has made me want to try again.

a lot of herbs do well in pots, as long as they aren't overwatered or left in blazing sun. many people have 'windowsill' herbs. i spent a lot of money to import soil here and plant herbs....all i did was fight snakes, heat, and fire ants. so i brought a few favorites inside.

i bought it from a garden center, don't know where it came from. my soil was sandy and arid, this stuff was very rich. supposed to be an excellent growing medium. i hope you try again!

Thanks LC. It was a seriuos question that mybe I didn't say real good.

I like to cook, don't much anymore but use to a lot.....I am alone now so .....never mind.

I personally think, if you make a dish, nearly any dish, and add freesh herbs to it......

well that makes it special. So I say

Newb, you might try chives and rosemary, they are often good for "first timers"

as they are pretty forgiving. That is, if you like those flavors. Be careful and

not overwater them, they actually have stronger flavor if they are "stressed"

a tiny bit...
