I think I'll stick with the traditional menu. Black eyed peas, hawg jowl, turnip greens ( poke salit, when in season, and I can find it ) fried taters, cornbread, and a big cold glass of buttermilk.

I never understood why people want to bring beans or peas to a boil, and then let them soak, just to pour off the water and rinse them. I just cook em, and let the soup get a little thick, so I can pour it over a piece of cornbread, but then, that's how we do it in the south.

Mudd, your way sounds good.  It was only a few years ago that I first had Black eyed peas.  Found them an interesting taste.

Black eyed peas and greens, as well as the other things I mentioned, with the exception of the buttermilk, is a traditional New Years Day meal in my family, as well as lots of others in the south. I can't remember a time in my life that we didn't have that meal.

Have you ever eaten poke salit? It's a wild plant that grows along fence rows and alongside roads. It is mildly poisionous if you don't cook it right, and the only time you can get it is early to mid spring.

I think blackeyed peas are delicious, if they are cooked right. I'm sorry, but cooking beans and peas by the method that is printed on the bags just ain't right.

It is delicious. It has a stronger taste than most greens, but I like it better. The only problem is finding it at the right time. If you ever get the chance, try some.
