Just wondering how far you would go to accomodate dinner guests who had special food requests?  Would what they want or the size of your party make a difference?

I think for me, it would depend on the request.  I mean, if I knew a guest had a shellfish allergy, or one to peanuts or something, I would either not include those items on my menu, or offer them an alternative.  I have friends who are vegetarians, as well as a couple of diabetics.  While I probably would not cater entirely to their needs, I would at least make sure they had something they liked on the menu.  I would probably do some sort of buffet or something, with a variety of options.

But, then again, what if a guest does not disclose a food issue prior to the party?  Then my feeling is they are on their own.

I think it is a matter of respecting a friend's choices.  We happen to have a friend who does not eat red meat.  So, if we were to invite him to dinner, we are not going to throw steaks on the grill.

What is your feeling?  If you are someone with certain food preferences, what to you do to let your host know?

Since my husband and I are both diabetic, we always let the host know ahead of time, and almost always they are very accommodating.  We, in turn, always ask our guests what their food preferences are if we don't already know ahead of time.  Of course we usually only have a few people over at a time so it's easy to serve what they like or can eat.
