I've actually never been there, but we have the annual Blue Ridge Barbeque festival, and then there's also the NC one in Lexington.

About 100,000 people go to Lexington for the NC BBQ festival there!

A friend who is from there happens to be a pilot -- he says you can smell the smoked pig from TEN THOUSAND FEET up over top of the town on that weekend...

There are more than 300 different 'teams' there serving BBQ

It's the biggest BBQ festival in the country, with 150,000 attending in 2003.

That's twice any other competition in the country... never mind that the Texans don't believe it.

The American Royal in Kansas City only claims 70,000, and less for other events around the country.
Texas competitions I found on the Internet show lower attendance than Lexington too, according to TourTexas.com
