Just do not use this as a reason to over do Moderate Drinking for Strong Bones? Analysis Suggests Alcohol in Moderation May Protect Against Bone Fractures By Salynn Boyles WebMD Medical News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD May 22, 2008 -- Alcoholism is a well-established risk factor for osteoporosis and related fractures, but a drink or two a day just may help keep bones strong, a review of the research shows. Moderate alcohol consumption -- and the key is "moderate" -- was associated with a lower risk for hip fracture and low bone density when data from 33 separate studies were combined. Compared to total abstainers, people who drank a half to one alcoholic beverage a day were found to be 20% less likely to suffer hip fractures, while people who drank more than two drinks a day had a 39% increased risk. Moderate alcohol consumption is generally considered one drink a day or less for women and two drinks a day or less for men. "There is quite a bit of literature that supports the beneficial effects of moderate alcohol consumption on health, and our paper adds to that," lead researcher Karina Berg, MD, of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, tells WebMD. "But it also adds to the evidence that heavy alcohol consumption is detrimental." Specifically, drinking more than two alcoholic beverages a day was associated with an increased risk for hip fracture in the analysis, which appears in the May issue of the American Journal of Medicine. 3 Drinks Is Too Many The studies reviewed by Berg and colleagues were not specifically designed to examine the impact of alcohol consumption on bone loss and fracture risk. These studies are needed to better understand the risk and benefits of drinking alcohol on bone health, Berg says. She adds that it is not yet clear how much alcohol is optimal for maximizing bone density and minimizing hip fracture risk. But it seems clear from other studies that three drinks a day is too many, National Osteoporosis Foundation President and osteoporosis researcher Ethel Siris, MD, tells WebMD. A fracture-risk assessment model, recently published by the World Health Organization, lists consumption of three or more alcoholic drinks a day as a major risk factor for fractures caused by weakened bones. Her own 2001 study, which assessed osteoporosis risk in more than 200,000 women, suggested that moderate alcohol consumption is protective against bone loss. But Siris says more research is needed to confirm the association. "The benefits of moderate drinking are debatable," she says. "It may be true, as this (analysis) suggests, that in small amounts alcohol is protective against fracture. But the evidence linking excessive drinking to a higher risk of fracture is much stronger." Estrogen May Be the Key It is not known exactly how alcohol affects bone density. If moderate drinking does help protect bones, hormones may explain why, Berg says. Alcohol increases circulating estrogen, which helps keep bones strong. Whatever the mechanism, Berg says alcohol intake is only one of many factors that may influence osteoporosis risk. Family history, weight, calcium intake, estrogen exposure, smoking history, and activity level all influence risk. "Each person has to evaluate their own risk, and no one who doesn't drink should start drinking based on this research," she says.

I read about this study, too. I don't remember all the science, but whatever is in the alcohol that helps your bones, could also lead to a higher risk for breast cancer. So that's something else to think about before changing one's drinking habits. Marlene Dietrich never worried about these things. She drank all she wanted, and just spent the last ten years of her life, never leaving her bed, and that way she didn't have to worry about falling and breaking her bones.

For Bible-loving Americans - Jesus didn't mind a bit of wine. Nor did St Paul. In the Old Testament, bread and wine and oil were considered the basic foods to gladden the heart. Europeans routinely include wine with their meals, without fuss or breastbeating. It's always been a mystery to me why anyone could consider all alcohol to be somehow sinful. Water will kill you if you don't use it properly. But nobody has seriously considered banning that. I don't know whether my evening glass of wine will give me stonger bones or not, but my dinner would not be complete without it. Your very good health!!

Good point, Aussie. But many Bible readers will always find something there to confirm what they have to say. All I know is I drink less than moderatly, and my hip got all shot. Probably no correlation, but I may increase my intake of a toddy or two now and then.

This kind of study usually annoys me. Ten years from now, we will have a different study to say the complete opposite of what this one says. There are studies out there that say chocolate has an ingredient to help fight cavities! But I guarantee if you eat chocolate every day you will have more cavities than those who don't. Another study says alcohol - consumed in moderation - helps your heart. And ten years from now we'll have another study that says those who never drink have stronger hearts than those who do. Everything in moderation, folks. From booze to coffee, to milk to red meat to chicken to eggs to vegetables to starch.....just be smart about what you put into your body.

Didn't someone once say "everything in moderation." But, UTR, you have a definate point there. It seems they spend alot of our money studying the stupidest things.

I think the quote you might be refering to is a misquote from the Bible, from Philippians 4:5 which says "Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand." The word moderation from the Greek, epieikes, means, mildness; kindness; meekness; gentleness, but people use it by saying do all things in moderation, and say it comes from the Bible.
