i used to live on this street...when it was harvest time my kids would track in cranberries! they were all over the road. it's a beautiful sight, as lovely as the foliage. the cranberry bogs are flooded with water over winter to protect them, we would ice-skate on them.

I didn't realise cranberries were a water crop.  I would NEVER have guessed that.

many people think they grow on trees. when the pilgrims came here, they called them CRANEberries. the stuff in a can is an abomination, i make my own...pound of berries, a little water and sugar, simmer until the berries pop open. chill, and you have whole berry sauce.

Never would have dreamed a water crop.  This is a good yummy thread - that stuff is great with turkey.  Lady Cop, that sounds awesome...

I'm in NJ and we are the largest grower of cranberries in the nation I'm told. Yummy, toxic cranberries LOL

I think that Ocean Spray buys most of NJ's crops too. This time of year you can drive down any highway that passes through the wetlands here and see them harvesting them.

Most lakeshores and wet woodland areas have wild cranberries all over the place.

for those who like to make cranberry nutbreads all winter, they freeze very nicely. while they're still in the stores fresh this time of year, just toss a few bags in the freezer.

I think I only learned recently that they were grown in water.   I have never been a fan of cranberries, so I guess I just never paid attention.  Once in a while I get one of those small cans of them for Rick, because he likes them.

My mom did them from fresh, some times, but I never watched her do them.

I guess if I liked it too, I would consider making it from scratch.  But since it is just Rick and I, and since HE is the only one who eats it..he gets the canned.  .::bat::

This is a neat thread.  My grandma on my moms side, had a Cranberry Bog at the Washington coast many years ago.  I LOVE cranberries and always make my own sauce.  It's fun to let granddaughter make the sauce at Thanksgiving.  We add a little orange to ours also................I never visited the bog, but mom did.  One year she and my dad even helped harvest the berries.  I've got a beautiful wood scoop they used and I use it for a magazine rack!
