Cranberries are not a water crop. They grow on vines that rest on the ground.

Cranberries are harvested two ways. First is a dry harvest, during which the berries are picked off the vines by a harvester that acts something like a vacuum cleaner. This produces berries that can be stored for longer periods of time. If you get bags of loose whole berries, it's likely that those were dry-harvested. Second is a wet harvest, which is what you see in the picture above. During the wet harvest, the field is mechanically flooded (as opposed to naturally) and the berries float to the surface, separating them from the vines. The berries produced in wet harvesting have to be processed soon after picking; these berries go into the cans of jelly that your mom sliced up to put next to the Thanksgiving turkey.

Cranberries are the main agriculture crop on Cape Cod. Chatham cranberry grower Ray Murphy and son Brian operating mechanical pickers on a local bog as they harvest the year's bounty.

Termed "dry picking", this method provides fruit that can be stored for longer periods before processing

"Wet picking", involves flooding the bog, mechanically separating berries from the vines; berries then float to the surface and are gathered and brought to market.  Wet picked berries usually need to be processed fairly soon after harvesting

Revolving toothed rake at front of machine separates berries from the vine, depositing fruit in the conveyor visible directly above the rake

Berries are dropped from the conveyor into a basket. When full, the basket is set aside for later pickup.  Note supply of extra baskets carried on pickers. Power is supplied by gasoline engine located at operator's left
