So, I collect cookbooks. I have almost two shelves on my book case of them. Thing is..I rarely use them anymore. Once in a while I may look for ideas for something to make, but then I just create something on my own. Or when I do use a recipe, if we like it, and I use it often, it ends up becoming so changed and modified it in no way resembles the original recipe. Is anyone else a pinch of this, a little of that kind of cook??

I also have lots of cookbooks that I seldom use. I like to follow recipes, but don't get the time to cook as frequently as I'd like, since we have our own business and until recently were working 12 to 16 hours a day.

i love my collection of cookbooks, and will refer to them when i want to do something exotic or a special baked good. i was really into gourmet cooking a while back, but not so much any more since i am cooking for one. i also keep a big folder of favorite recipes collected over the years, including my Mom and Grandmother's.

Also a scrapbook of recipes my mother in law (who I never met) put together. In my family, my brother is the one I usually and often call if I have a cooking question. He has taken cooking classes, and now that he is retired, he watches the Food Network on TV alot.

Oh I LIVE for Food Network! Also, my mom and I buy cook books all the time and read them like a book! We consider it a great book if we use two recipes from it! Got Paula D..........Barefoot C...................Semi homemade, and about 30 other good cook books I've picked up over the years. Love them all. What is it about a cook book that you can't get rid of them?

When I first moved out of home I bought a second hand copy of Mrs. Beeton's household management, and it was great to get me started off on the basics. My mum has the nickname of the microwave queen, so I didn't learn anything from her really! I really like cooking from scratch and spent loads of time experimenting..I still enjoy it now.

Pinky, I like cooking from scratch also. I look to recipes for some ideas, then go to town. My mom was a pretty good cook, but I was not able to learn alot from her. She took ill when I was in my early 20's and died a few years later. I never really took the time to learn from her. But through trial and error, I have figured out some of her things, like her chicken soup. Luckily, my brother paid more attention than I did, and can usually go to him with questions.

I have some from 1898 and maybe a little earlier they talk about measurments the old way like "dram" what the heck is a dram? And how to stuff a turkey (1) wring or chop neck (2) remove feathers and gut bird and bread starts out (1) grind wheat to a fine powder....................geez! A meal was something back then was'nt it.

Marie5656 wrote: Is anyone else a pinch of this, a little of that kind of cook?? Yep, I am like that, as well! I enjoy cookbooks as a guide to appropriate spice and food combinations from around the world, and then I start making stuff up. With good results, I might add! I love to cook. CHEMISTRY IN THE KITCHEN! Yes, I am a mad scientist with edible ingredients and cross-cultural influences as my tools, "Wha-ha-haaaa!" I particularly enjoy messing with ingredients and foodstuffs from Western Asia and North Africa.

Only time I've used a cookbook is for baking (I forget what), since baked goods and candies require exact recipies to work right. Otherwise, it's the pinch/dash/etc. method
