With my husband having diabetes and High Cholesterol, and both of us trying to lose weight, the nutrition label on packaged foods has become our best friend.

I found this guide a bit helpful in understanding what you are reading.

Ours are really simple these days, they have a colour coded traffic light system on the packet...green means it's low in nasties and good for you, yellow means sort of average...scoff it but not in large does and red means high in everything and eat occasionally.

In other words:

Green = Tastes horrible, but you'll buy it at least once out of guilt.

Yellow = Marginal flavor.  Close to the real thing but lacking something critical.  This is the stuff you actually force down to make yourself feel good about eating crap.

Red = This is the stuff you'd rather be eating all the time.  Hidden in the back of the pantry behind the green items.

My husband and I both have diabetes and high cholesterol.  We spend forever at the grocery store checking food labels!
